Biography

Sir William Morgan (1567-1652) was the 1st s. of Thomas Morgan II of Machen and Tredegar, Monmouthshire. and Elizabeth, da. of Roger Bodenham of Rotherwas, Herefs. He matriculated Hart Hall, Oxf. in 1583, and Staple Inn by 1585.

He m. (1) by c.1588,3 Elizabeth, da. of Sir William Winter of Lydney, Glos. 5s. 4 or 5da. and (2) by settlement 10 Feb. 1610, Bridget (d. 27 Feb. 1611), da. of Anthony Morgan of Heyford, Northants., wid. of Anthony Morgan of Llanfihangel Crucorney, Monmouthshire. 1s. He was knighted at the coronation of James I/IV 23 July 1603.

He made his will 15 Jan. 1651,^[1] and the precise date of his death is unknown. His son eldest son Thomas by his first wife was granted a commission for administering his estate in May 1652. Thomas defeated a challenge to the will by his half-brother Anthony Morgan, who received nothing in the will.

Sir William Morgan was born about 1560 in Tredegar, Monmouthshire, Wales. Morgan was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Morgan (died 1603). He was knighted on 23 July 1603. In 1612 he was Sheriff of Monmouthshire.He died about 1655 in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales.^[2][3][4] The Morgan Family is a much-researched family. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Sir William Morgan (1560–1655) was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons of England in 1624 and 1625. He supported the Royalist cause in the English Civil War. Morgan was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Morgan (died 1603). He was knighted on 23 July 1603. In 1612 he was Sheriff of Monmouthshire. Family. Morgan married firstly Elizabeth Wynter daughter of Sir William Wynter of Lydney Gloucestershire. He married secondly Bridget Morgan widow of Anthony Morgan of Llanfihangael Crucorney and daughter of Anthony Morgan of Heyford Northamptonshire. They had several children. Thomas was later MP for Monmouthshire. Anthony was later a Royalist officer in the Civil War. John married Rebecca Smith. Sir Anthony Morgan (died 1665) of Kilflgin, Monmouthshire, was a Royalist officer during the English Civil War.[1] Morgan was the son of Sir William Morgan, of Tredegar, Monmouthshire, and Bridget, daughter and heiress of Anthony Morgan of Heyford, Northamptonshire.[2] He seems identical with the Anthony Morgan who was appointed by the Spanish ambassador Cardenas, on 9 June 1640, to levy and transport the residue of the two thousand soldiers afforded to him by King Charles I.[3] On 21 October 1642 Morgan was knighted by Charles at Southam, Warwickshire,[4] and two days later fought at the Battle of Edgehill. By the death of his half-brother, Colonel Thomas Morgan, who was killed at the Battle of Newbury 20 September 1643, he became possessed of the manors of Heyford and Clasthorpe, Northamptonshire; and had other property in Momouthshire, Warwickshire, and Westmoreland. He subsequently went abroad, but returned in 1648, when, though his estates were sequestered by the parliament by an ordinance dated 5 January 1646, he imprisoned several of his tenants in Banbury Castle for not paying their rent to him.[5] Morgan tried to compound for his property in May 1650, and took the covenent and negative oath, but being represented as a "papist delinquent", he was unable to make terms with the Committee for Compounding with Delinquents.[6] In August 1658 he obtained leave to pay a visit to France.[7] One Anthony Morgan was ordered to be arrested and brought before Secretary Bennet on 5 June 1663, and his papers were seized.[8] He died in St. Giles-in-the-Fields, London, about June 1665,[9] 1665, leaving by his wife Elizabeth (? William Morgan (died 1649) was a Welsh lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1640 to 1649. Morgan was the son of Llewellyn Morgan of Ystradfellte. He was called to the bar. He purchased the estate of Dderw in Llyswen. He was recorder of Brecon from 1637 and was King's attorney in South Wales until his death.[1] In April 1640, Morgan was elected Member of Parliament for Breconshire in the Short Parliament. He was re-elected MP for Breconshire for the Long Parliament in November 1640 and sat until his death in 1649.[2] In February 1649 information was laid against him that he had supported the Royalist cause in the Civil War, raising money and arms for the king and sitting in the King's parliament in Oxford.[1] Morgan died in 1649 and was buried in the Priory Church, Brecon.[1] Morgan married Elizabeth Morgan, daughter of Sir William Morgan of Tredegar. His son William was High Sheriff in 1655. WILLIAM MORGAN (1560 - 1653) was Sheriff in 1612. He was a member of Parliament from 1623-25, and Knighted in 1633. He received King Charles I at Tredegar July 16-17, 1645. He married first wife, ELIZABETH WINTERS, in 1581. (She was the daughter of SIR WILLIAM WINTERS of Lidney and was born in 1564). His second wife was BRIDGET MORGAN of Hayford. (The descendants of Sir William assumed the titles of Lord Tredegar. In 1792 this title was raised to Baronet Tredegar and to Baron Tredegar in 1859. In 1905 it was raised again to Viscount Tredegar. The title became extinct in 1962 when the last Viscount died without an heir.)
