Sir William Morgan was born about 1560 in Tredegar, Monmouthshire, Wales. Morgan was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Morgan (died 1603). He was knighted on 23 July 1603. In 1612 he was Sheriff of Monmouthshire. He died about 1655 in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales.[2][3][4] The Morgan Family is a much-researched family. This is the family which Daniel Boone (of Kentucky Fame), Justin Morgan (The Morgan Horse), and Henry Morgan (The Famous Buccaneer) all descended from. The problem was, putting all the information together. So many have researched the family pertaining directly to their family lineage. We have attempted to join as much information of the families together and try to put together the whole picture. Several of the greatest difficulties we faced were: 1) The families all named their children the same. With several Johns or Thomas's in the same generation it sometimes got difficult to connect them to the proper parents. 2) Within the Morgan family it was very common that first cousins married. The different families are intertwined many times. This was quite common in the old days, as I have run into this with other families I have researched also. [7] The word "Mor-gan" is a Cymric derivative, meaning one born by the sea (muir, sea ; gin, begotten). It's one of the oldest Welsh names on record, stretching back to the legends of King Arthur: The story goes that after a defeat in battle with a local potentate, Arthur removed his queen for safety to the coast of what is now the county of Glamorganshire, in Wales. Her child, Arthur's younger son, was born there and named Mor-gan—the man 'born by the sea'—and from that they named the land Gla-mor-gan, meaning the country of the man born by the sea. Because of the intermarriage in the Morgan Family I am my own 14th cousin. I am proud to say that I am the 2nd half cousin - 9 times removed to Justin Morgan, and the 4th cousin - 9 times removed to Daniel Boone. It may be distant relations at this point, but I'll grab the glory. [4]

Sir Anthony Morgan (died 1665) of Kilflgin, Monmouthshire, was a Royalist officer during the English Civil War.[1] Morgan was the son of Sir William Morgan, of Tredegar, Monmouthshire, and Bridget, daughter and heiress of Anthony Morgan of Heyford, Northamptonshire.[2] He seems identical with the Anthony Morgan who was appointed by the Spanish ambassador Cardenas, on 9 June 1640, to levy and transport the residue of the two thousand soldiers afforded to him by King Charles I.[3] On 21 October 1642 Morgan was knighted by Charles at Southam, Warwickshire,[4] and two days later fought at the Battle of Edgehill. By the death of his half-brother, Colonel Thomas Morgan, who was killed at the Battle of Newbury 20 September 1643, he became possessed of the manors of Heyford and Clasthorpe, Northamptonshire; and had other property in Momouthshire, Warwickshire, and Westmoreland. He subsequently went abroad, but returned in 1648, when, though his estates were sequestered by the parliament by an ordinance dated 5 January 1646, he imprisoned several of his tenants in Banbury Castle for not paying their rent to him.[5] Morgan tried to compound for his property in May 1650, and took the covenent and negative oath, but being represented as a "papist delinquent", he was unable to make terms with the Committee for Compounding with Delinquents.[6] In August 1658 he obtained leave to pay a visit to France.[7] One Anthony Morgan was ordered to be arrested and brought before Secretary Bennet on 5 June 1663, and his papers were seized.[8] He died in St. Giles-in-the-Fields, London, about June 1665,[9] 1665, leaving by his wife Elizabeth (? Fromond) an only daughter, Mary.[10] From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Morgan_of_Kilflgin ____________________

William Morgan (died 1649) was a Welsh lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1640 to 1649. Morgan was the son of Llewellyn Morgan of Ystradfellte. He was called to the bar. He purchased the estate of Dderw in Llyswen. He was recorder of Brecon from 1637 and was King's attorney in South Wales until his death.[1] In April 1640, Morgan was elected Member of Parliament for Breconshire in the Short Parliament. He was re-elected MP for Breconshire for the Long Parliament in November 1640 and sat until his death in 1649.[2] In February 1649 information was laid against him that he had supported the Royalist cause in the Civil War, raising money and arms for the king and sitting in the King's parliament in Oxford.[1] Morgan died in 1649 and was buried in the Priory Church, Brecon.[1] Morgan married Elizabeth Morgan, daughter of Sir William Morgan of Tredegar. His son William was High Sheriff in 1655. He was the father-in-law of William Morgan (of Machen and Tredegar).[1] From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Morgan_(of_Dderw) _____________________________

WILLIAM MORGAN (1560 - 1653) was Sheriff in 1612. He was a member of Parliament from 1623-25, and Knighted in 1633. He received King Charles I at Tredegar July 16-17, 1645. He married first wife, ELIZABETH WINTERS, in 1581. (She was the daughter of SIR WILLIAM WINTERS of Lidney and was born in 1564). His second wife was BRIDGET MORGAN of Hayford. (The descendants of Sir William assumed the titles of Lord Tredegar. In 1792 this title was raised to Baronet Tredegar and to Baron Tredegar in 1859. In 1905 it was raised again to Viscount Tredegar. The title became extinct in 1962 when the last Viscount died without an heir.)

I am still finding issues with dates? It is claimed that daughter Elizabeth was the youngest daughter of William and first wife Elizabeth and she was born in 1605. It is claimed he was married to his second wife in 1595? I think there needs to be some discussion among the different profile managers of this group. Some of the information in the many older documents may be contributing to this. Good luck!

Morgan-4342 and Morgan-126 appear to represent the same person because: same/similar dates, wife attached to -126 is in the biography of -4342

Morgan-4342 and Morgan-126 do not represent the same person because: I've looked at the William Morgan II who had a child called Miles. It looks like this William Morgan you have had a father called Llewellyn Morgan of Ystradfellte and not William.

This couple William and Cwladis - I am not sure they even exist. They are not listed in the one source we have for Morgans as parents of William merchant of Diveru. They need to be disconnected. Objections?

In the profile for Elizabeth Winter Morgan daughter Elizabeth is listed as born first in 1583 not 10th as in this Biography. I still question the 1567 birth date in this profile for William and also given in Elizabeth Winter's profile for his birth. William would have been married at 15 and a father at 16 years of age with the 1567 date?
posted by Ken Morgan
I question some of the dates. In the Biography it states William and Elizabeth were married by c. 1588 but in the profile it said they were married as early as 1582. William would have be 15? Thomas is listed as the oldest child born in 1589 which would work with the 1588 marriage date. Elizabeth child #10 comes up as born in 1583 in this and her own profile. This does not seem correct given the order of her birth and the birth and marriage dates of her parents and siblings? In other places in the Biography it lists Williams birth as 1560 vs 1567 in the profile?
