Lost part of his hand during the Battle of The Somme, France 1916 - WW1. Military Service - 12 Platoon, B Company, 1/4 Battalion the Royal Lancaster Regiment. 154 Infantry Brigade, 57 Highland Division. Rank - Lance Corporal.
Senior Air Raid warden during war years WW2 (1939 - 2 Jan 1941).
Killed by enemy action when bombs were dropped on the mining cottages of Steel Green, Haverig, Millom at 5 am on 2 January 1941. He was asleep in bed with his wife Fanny when roof and ceiling blown in by direct bomb hit. He died when a brick hit him in the throat. (5 in the street killed). Jack (his son) on home leave from RAF was thrown through the bedroom window onto green. Ron (his other son) was buried under bed and dug out. John's wife (Fanny) was buried and carried out on a stretcher from 3 Steel Green. Hodbarrow. (Plaque to Jack erected on Millom cenotaph).
