Biography

Margaret (Norman) Morgan immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Flag of Dorset (St Wite's Cross, adopted 2008)
Margaret (Norman) Morgan was born in Dorset, England.

Margaret Norman, daughter of Richard and Florence (___) Norman, was baptized on 4 February 1614/5 at Charminster, Dorset, England. [1]

Immigration

She likely arrived in New England prior to 1628 with her family. [2] [3]

At Massachusetts Bay

She married by 1633, Robert Morgan, a cooper of Cape Ann/Salem, Massachusetts. [2] [3] [4]

The birth order of their sons Samuel, Joseph, Robert, Benjamin and Luke is unknown as they were all baptized as Salem, Massachusetts on the same date, June 23, 1650. [5] [6]

Robert Morgan made his will October 14, 1672, which was proved on June 24, 1673. In it he bequested to son Samuel, 12 acres of land in Manchester given his wife by her 'father Norman'. He left further bequests to: [2] [3] [7] [2] [3]

  • wife Margaret
  • son Samuel, sole executor
  • son Benjamin
  • son Robert
  • son Joseph
  • son Moses
  • daughter Bethia
  • Ensign Corning and John Stone, overseers [7]

Margaret died before November 14, 1694. [7] [6]

On November 14, 1694, son-in-law Samuel Weed of Amesbury submitted a petition to the court to have Samuel Morgan, administrator of the estate of Robert Morgan to appear in court to settle the estate. Robert's will had indicated should any of his sons die before their mother's decease, any lands given to them should go to their heirs after Margaret's decease. Samuel indicated that three sons had died without issue and he had interest in their inheritance in the right of his wife Bethiah. [7]

Children

  1. Samuel Morgan, baptized on June 23, 1650; died before November 16, 1698 when his will was proved; married first, Elizabeth Dixby at Salem on December 15, 1658 and removed to Cape Ann [5] [6] [4]; married second, widow Mary (Phippen) Wallis by 1692. [8]
  2. Joseph Morgan, baptized on June 23, 1650 [5]: died before October 31, 1732 when his will was probated; married his first cousin, Deborah Hart at Lynn, Massachusetts on July 12, 1669. [9]; married second widow Sarah Hill on October 25, 1694. [4] [10] (See Note immediately below.)
  3. Robert Morgan, baptized on June 23, 1650 [5]; died before 1694, without issue. [7] [6]
  4. Benjamin Morgan, on June 23, 1650 [5]; slain by Indians before July 1677. [4] without issue. [7] [6]
  5. Luke Morgan, baptized on June 23, 1650 [5]; died before 1673. [4] [6]
  6. Moses Morgan, born ___ [7] ; likely a son who died by 1694. [7] [4]
  7. Bethiah Morgan, was baptized on May 29, 1653; married Samuel Weed, son of John and Deborah (Winsley) Weed of Amesbury, on March 12, 1676/6. [5] [4] [6] [11]
Note: Son Joseph Morgan: In 1694, Samuel Weed indicated three sons of Robert were deceased without issue, Samuel Morgan, administrator, being alive. https://archive.org/stream/probaterecordsof02mass#page/356/search/Morgan. Many texts indicate that the three deceased sons were Robert, Joseph and Benjamin. However the third is likely Moses who was deceased, and not Joseph as Anderson indicates Joseph Morgan, son of Robert Morgan, married Deborah Hart. GM: III: p. 230.

Research notes

Disputed Spouse: A second marriage to Samuel Fowler: Although it has been stated in earlier texts by Perley and Stickney, that Margaret married Samuel Fowler, evidence for this union has been so far unsubstantiated. See the sketch of "Richard Norman" in The Great Migration Begins.[3]

The marriage date of 1633 in Massachusetts conflicts with Robert Morgan's claimed arrival in Salem in 1636? A later date between 1636 - 1638 would work better with the projected birth date of Samuel.
posted by Ken Morgan
I think it is all uncertain. You don't really know when Robert Morgan arrived. You don't really know when Samuel was born - I suspect the 1638 date is wrong and so can't be used to set the marriage date.

Norman-141 and Morgan-404 are not ready to be merged because: The problem is with Morgan-404, who is reported the mother of Fowler children born 1650 and 1660. Margaret (Norman) Morgan was first the wife of Robert Morgan; who was much alive and on the record when those two children were born. See also the G2G question about Samuel Fowler, http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/73608/migration-article-presents-conflicts-about-samuel-fowler

Walter Goodwin Davis (Ancestry of Sarah Stone, 1930, 46) is one source Margaret and Robert Morgan.

That she later married Fowler is devised from a deed. I've read the language, but haven't done the related work. Two modern works (Anderson and Leslie Mahler), report there isn't historical support/ evidence for the Margaret-Fowler marriage.

posted by GeneJ X
(a) In Great Migration, Anderson says no historical evidence to support Margaret's marriage to Fowler. He cites David Webster Hoyt, _The Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury Massachusetts_, 164.

(b) Might someone be able to provide a reference and logic/reasoning for the death vital reported as, "1693, New Hampshire."
