Biography

Francis Morgan and Sarah (Blower) Morgan were married about 18 Jul 1665.[citation needed] One text consistently suggests that the fourth marriage of Sarah would have been after 1660 (when she had married Captain John Mitchell), describing her fourth husband as Surgeon Francis Morgan, though the author does refer to her by her stepfather's surname (Tilley) instead of her father's (Blower).[1]

Morgan and Sarah had at least one daughter, Mary (Morgan) Lewis.[citation needed] (Note: Mary was recently removed as Sarah's daughter due to lack of any sources or evidence.)

We have some documentary evidence that Francis Morgan was alive circa 14 Oct 1665, when he sold land on Spruce Creek to Senator Richard Endle. The Stackpole (1903, p. 63) text describes Morgan: who had married the widow of Hugh Gunnison.

Stackpole (1903, p. 55-6) also describes Morgan as residing in Warehouse Point in 1667.

Stackpole (1903, p. 50) describes the history of ordinarys, noting that before Sarah had married Morgan, she was licensed to keep an ordinary at Kittery Point Mar 1663/4, and that Francis Morgan held the license 4 Jul 1671.

Lastly, Morgan is described as the second chiurgeon, of Kittery Point, actively so through 1673 [Stackpole (1903, p. 54)].

Research Notes

  • Sir William Morgan of Tredegar and Elizabeth Winter were not the parents of Francis Morgan: they did not have a son named Francis.

  • A Find A Grave: Memorial #35613064 that focuses on his wife, Sarah who was born Blower and later used Tilley once her father died, is discussed in the context of her three marriages, including a report of their marriage, citing Anderson - Great Migration Study Project. The website for the same does not index Francis Morgan, but other texts related to the great migration works may have him in it.
  • No reliable sources have been found to show that Mary (Morgan) Lewis (1638-1727) is Francis and Sarah Morgan's daughter and her profile has been detached.
