Biography

Johannah (Hannah/Joanha/Johanna) Morgan was baptized Johannah Morgan[1] on 6 April 1755 in the third parish of Gloucester, Massachusetts Bay Colony to Paul and Ruth (Lane) Morgan.[2][3] The third parish in northern Gloucester was founded in 1728 and included Squam, Lanesville and Bay View in northern Gloucester (i.e., the modern villages within Gloucester of Annisquam and Lanesville).[4][5]

Family

Joanha Morgan married Joseph Lane, son of Caleb Lane and Lydia Riggs, on 26 February 1782. [6][7]

An historian and genealogist, James Fitts, recorded[8]:

"Joseph Lane was born in Annisquam, Gloucester, Mass., baptized 30 November, 1760. He was a cordwainer at Lanesville and bought land in 1798. He married 26 February, 1782, by Rev. Eli Forbes, to Joanna Morgan and died intestate, 1832, [9] leaving a widow Joanna to whom dower was assigned Apr. 21, 1835. Division of the estate was made Noyember 17, 1835, to Amos Griffin, to Andrew H. Langsford, to John S. Lane, to Jonathan Harraden and to Mary Andrews.

"Children :

"I. Elizabeth, baptized by Rev. William Williams of Casco Bay, died of old age 11 Sept., 1872, age 85 yrs., 8 months, 24 days.

"II. Jane, entered intent of marriage 27 Sept., 1800, with Jonathan Harraden of Gloucester.

"III. Mary, married 22 November, 1807, by Rev. E. Learned, with Stephen Andrews.

"IV. Lucy, married 26 August, 1810, with Amos Griffin.

"V. Judith, baptized 23 June, 1798, by Rev. Manassah Cutler, married 21 July, 1 81 8, by Rev. Ezra Learned, to Andrew H. Langsford, and died before 1835, leaving minor children.

"VI Joseph, baptized 1801, died 12 December, 1819, age 17 years; fell overboard from his uncle Aaron Lane's vessel coming from the eastward laden with wood.

"VII. John S., had wife Susan, and a son, born 2 Oct., 1843."

Death
Johanna/Hannah Morgan's death occurred after 1835 and most probably on 20 February 1840. The logic follows:
  • Jacob Chapman & James H Fitts tell us, "Joseph Lane... married ... Johanna Morgan and died intestate, 1832, leaving a widow, Joanna, to whom dower was assigned Apr. 21, 1835."[10]" She would have been alive when dower was assigned, so we must look for her death record after 1835.
  • We do not find the death of Johannah Morgan, but do find in the Gloucester Deaths a Hannah Morgan, then a widow, died at 89 years of age in Gloucester on 20 February 1840.[11] Although the age of 89 years in 1840 is slightly inconsistent with birth in 1755, two possible explanations exist. Hannah may not have been baptized until she was 4 years of age, or her age may have been recorded from memory.
