Dear Mrs Fletcher
Thank you for your e-mail regarding information about John Morley, a member of the Bombay Council around the mid 18th century. I am afraid that I was unable to find very little biographical information about John Morley in the records. No doubt there might be mentions of him in the Bombay Proceedings / Consultations for the period, but I am afraid due to both lack of staff and time we would be unable to make such lengthy and intensive searches.
The Bombay Council was the body that looked after / protected the trading concerns at Bombay on behalf of the East India Company, based in London. There was a Governor and members of Council and they discussed various matters and were sometimes obliged to refer certain questions of long term policy to the Court of Directors of the Company at home. The members were there to advise the Governor on dealing with immediate problems in the colony and coming from London.
I did however manage to find some records in the Ecclesiastical Returns, the births / baptisms, marriages and burials of European Christians in India between 1698 - 1947, for Morley and his family.
1. The marriage of John Morley and Mrs Susannah Parcel at Bombay on 6th September 1735 - N / 3 / 1 folio 749
2. John William, baptised 2nd October 1736
3. Janeta, born 26th September , baptised on 29th September 1737 - N / 3 / 1 folio 191
4. Catherine, born 9th October, baptised 27th September 27th 1738 - N / 3 / 1 folio 206
5. William, born 19th September, baptised 27th September 1739 - N / 3 / 1 folio 222
6. Martha, baptised 27th September - N / 3 / 1 folio 231
7. James, baptised 23rd September 1742 - N / 3 / 1 / 250
These were all the children I could find for John and Susannah Morley, and as you can see the information was somewhat limited. I also tried to find some information in a book of lectures entitled Bombay Presidency in the Mid - Eighteenth Century , given by Holden Furber in 1962, in the hope that there would be some mention of John Morley and also Thomas Stoneham, the pre 1743 merchant who resided in Bombay, but without success. I presume that Stoneham was a private merchant and not employed by the Company?
I am sorry that I have been unable to find as much information as I would have wished, but trust that what has been found proves of some assistance.
Yours sincerely
Tim Thomas, OIOC Reference Services

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
