Biography

Obituary in "The Independent" newspaper, Biggar, Saskatchewan, March 17, 1955

Funeral services for the late Philip Hamel were conducted from St. Paul's Anglican Church, Biggar, on Thursday, March 10th. Interment was in the Hillside Cemetary, Medicine Hat, Alberta. Mr. Hamel was born in the Jersey Islands on August 14, 1857 and passed away at Biggar on March 8, 1955. He went direct to Medicine Hat in 1886, and entered the service of the C.P.R. in the mechanical department. On October 14, 1894 he was married to Miss Mary Morrey at St. Barnabus Church, Medicine Hat. In 1899 they moved to Cranbrook, B.C., where eight years later he retired and moved to Biggar. Mr. Hamel worked in the building line until ill health forced him to retire. He was a member of the Anglican Church in Biggar, a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers in which he had a fifty year medal. On October last Mr. and Mrs. Hamel celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Surviving are his widow, Mary Hamel of Biggar, and one sister, Mrs. Woodward of Treherne, Manitoba. He was buried in the Morrey family plot in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Birth date

Mary's grave stone gives a birth year of 1874, and her christening in Knutsford, England was on January 18, 1874. On the 1901 census, her birth date is November 19, 1873 which seems consistent with the christening date.
