Biography

This profile is part of the Morris Name Study.

She was born on 08 Aug 1753 in Culpepper County, Virginia and her parents were Elizabeth Jane (Stapp) and William Morris, Sr. as their 9th child and first daughter.

Elizabeth "Betty" Morris first married about 1773 to John Walter Schull. [1]

As a widow, Betty married secondly about 1778 in Greenbrier, Virginia, USA to Michael See [2] and their children included ...

  1. Frances See
  2. George See
  3. Michael See
  4. Frederick See
  5. William See, b: 1792.

They lived near Witchers Creek. One of their slaves, Jonathan, was carried away by indians and later made a Chief. He was the son of Dick Pointer, the slave who held off the indians at Donnelly's Fort while the other person went to get a gun. He was freed for his bravery.

On the day she gave birth to their last child, William See, her husband Michael was killed by Shawnee Indians. Elizabeth and her brother Leonard Morris were appointed adminstrators of his estate. [3]

Betty married thirdly about 1793 to John VanBever or VanBibber.

She died about 1800 in Mason County, Virginia, USA.

Marriage Bond

"Know all men by these presents that we, John Hardy & Michael See, are held and firmly bound unto the the (sic) Commonwealth of Virginia in fifty pounds current money to be paid to said Commonwealth to the which payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executorsr and administrators, joint(l)y and severaly, firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seal and dated this 8th day of Septr 1780.

The condition of the above obligation is such that If there be no lawfull cause to obstruct a mariage Intended to be had and solemnized between the above bound Michael See and Elizabeth Shell, then the above obligation to void or else to remain in ful force and virtue.

(signatures) John Hardy (his H mark) & Michael See (his H mark)

Research Notes

Most Sees and Jarretts list Michael See's wife as Elizabeth Morris. This would confirm that Elizabeth Morris was widow "Elizabeth Shell" when she married Michael See -- assuming they are the same individual. No Shell or Schul appears in any Greenbrier land records, tithable lists or trading post account books. Was she married in Culpeper Co?? Her grandson is later named Shull See (son of Michael See and Nancy Greenlee).

Leah Schull, who married Morris Reynolds, was probably the daughter of Elizabeth Morris by her first marriage.

Some family charts mistakenly name her 3rd husband as Thomas Cobbs but Cobbs married a different Elizabeth SEE (daughter of George SEE who was Michael SEE's brother)
