John was born about 1829. His wife's name was Mary and they had lived in Sydney for a time.
John Morrison had been a saw miller when he bought the Abbotsford sugar mill at Tumbulgum NSW on the Tweed River in the mid-1870's. He was apparently a difficult man to deal with and growers deserted him in droves when CSR opened the Condong mill in about 1880.[1] He later converted the mill to a sawmill after 1891[2], but it fell into disuse by the mid-1890's and was sold in 1906 and scrapped.
In 1893 he was living and farming at Abbotsford, Tumbulgum when he shared second prize in a national competition for sugar cane.[3]
His house at Tumbulgum was destroyed by fire in 1895.
By 1909 he was living in Ashfield, NSW, although he retained land on the Tweed.[4]
