According to the book, Genealogical and Personal History of the Upper Monongahela Valley, W. VA, Vol II, page 700, he was a native of Fauquier County, VA, and was a carpenter by trade. His wife was Susan Roach, who came from Virginia. She bore him five children: Otto Lewis, Almira, Marian, Anna and Herman.
