Biography

John Robert Morrison was born, lived, and died in Northumberland County in North East England. The county borders Scotland to the north and the North Sea to the east. The River Tyne divides the county east to west. His childhood home in Benwell village was recorded in A.D. 1050 known as Bynnewalle which roughly translates as "behind the wall" or "by the wall". Referring to its position relative to Hadrian's Wall (next to which was the Roman fort of Condercum, hence the nearby Condercum Road). The Benwell Collier was the place of employment for many. [1]

John Robert lived within a couple miles of the river for his entire life.

John Robert Morrison – one of ten siblings and the first son – was born in 1855 in Northumberland, England, to parents George Morrison and Ann Jones. He parents and siblings Elizabeth Jane (b. 1849), Mary Ann (b. 1851), Jane (b.1859), George (b.1862), James (b. 1864), Emmeline (b. 1868), Ellenor (b.1870), immigrated to Utah, United States, after converting to the Church of Latter-day Saints. They sailed in 1879 aboard the S.S. Wyoming as steerage passengers.

It is unknown if John Robert joined the church. He would have been 24 when his family sailed for the United States.

In the 1861 England census, the family lived in Benwell, John Robert was age 5, a scholar.

In the 1871 England census, John Robert, age 15, is at home and working as an Engine Fitter Apprentice on Bath Terrace, Newcastle on Tyne.

John Robert Morrison was age 44 married Minnie Munsen in 3rd quarter 1899 in Hartlepool.

1901: John is widowed, living at 9 Herbert Street, with sons John W and George. He is a machine tender. They have a 'servant', 16-year-old Frances M Oswell.
1911: John is widowed, still living at 9 Herbert Street, Newcastle on Tyne, with sons John W and George. He is a machine tender at an engineering works.

Herbert Street

John Robert and his two sons lived at 9 Herbert Street, a narrow sloped street of tidy brick houses on one side, and St. Mary's Gateshead Cemetery shielded by a high wall and trees.

Children:

  1. John William Morrison, b. 1893
  2. George Frederick Morrison, 1899

Death

at age 62, 4th quarter 1916, Newcastle upon Tyne, seems like a good source. Right place, age about right, he was in the 1911 census, and none since. There is a record for Robert Morrison, age 76, Newcastle, but John Robert always went by 'John.'
