James was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Young James immigrated with his family in 1877. He was a brick mason and later took over the family grocery store. He married Emily Coles and the couple had eight children. James died of cardiac failure following broncho-pneumonia with complications from alcoholism; he refused medical attention.

James, age 29, and Miss Emily Coles, age 21, were married 29 May 1894 in the Territory of Utah by Thomas J Stevens, a Bishop in the Church of Later-day Saints. James' parents, George and Ann, were witnesses.
