James is understood to have migrated from Cabrrus County, North Carolina to Alabama in 1816 where he is said to have served as sheriff of Dallas County, Alabama for twelve years.[2] In 1829 James was made a Justice of the Peace in Dallas County, Alabama.[3] In 1834, James is understood to have moved to Yalobusha County, Mississippi where he obtained 160 acres of land in 1839.[4] He died in 1848.[5]
