There is some confusion in regard to his familiar name. The 1910 U.S Census for Coffee Co., Alabama has his name listed as "Hubbard". The 1920 and 1940 U.S. Census records for Coffee Co., Alabama have his name spelled as "Herbert". Friends and family referred to him as "Hub". His tombstone and Social Security Administration records have his name as "Hubert".
The 1940 U.S. Census records report that he had finished 6th grade and that he was employed as a janitor. During his life he worked at a number of different occupations including carpenter and handyman. During World War II he worked in Panama City, Florida, building Liberty Ships.
He raised a large family during the Great Depression. He kept a pint of whisky and soft peppermint candy to be used as cough formula. He loved babies and babies loved him. He was one of the best fishermen that anyone knew. He was almost impossible to beat at Checkers.
