Sir William la Zouche, 1st Lord Zouche, Keeper of the Tower of London was born after 1274 at Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire, England.[1]
William de Mortimer, later la Zouche, 1st Lord (Baron) Zouche (of Richard's Castle, Mortimer or Ashby, writs being addressed to him at various times under each of these three territorial qualifications), so created 26 Dec 1323 by writ of summons to Parliament.
Fought at Falkirk 1298.
In autumn 1304 secured reversion of manor of Ashby-de-la-Zouche, Leics, and other lands in Cambs and Sussex from his cousin 1st Lord (Baron) (la) Zouche of the Feb 1298/9 creation [see Alan 1st Baron la Zouche, of Ashby], coming into full possession of them 1314 on the latter's death.
Involved in the murder of Edward II's favorite Piers Gaveston but pardoned 1313.
Fought on Edward II's side at the Battle of Boroughbridge 16 March 1321/2, where the King temporarily defeated his opponents;
Keeper of Caerphilly Castle Feb 1326/7.
Keeper of Glamorgan and Morganno and Chamberlain of Cardiff Feb-June 1327.
Keeper of the Tower of London 1328-29.
Justice of the Forest South of Trent 1328-29.
m. 1st by licence dated 25 Feb 1316/7, as her 3rd husband, Alice, sister of 1st and last Lord (Baron) Tony. [2]
m. 2nd c. Jan 1328/9 Lady Eleanor de Clare (b. Oct 1292; d. 30 June 1337), daughter of 6th Earl of Gloucester and Hertford of the 1122 creation by his 2nd wife Joan (daughter of Edward I) and widow of 1st Lord (Baron) Le Despenser of the 1314 creation.[3]

William la Zuche of Richard's Castle who was living in the time of Edward III (25 January 1327—21 June 1377) had children:
On 30 January 1332, William la Zousch de Mortimer acknowledged that he owed to Roger de Mortimer of Richard's Castle and others, £2,000, and payment was to be levied of his lands and chattels in co Worcester; and two days later on 1 February 1332, William la Zousch de Mortimer, Roger de Mortimer of Richard's Castle and others, acknowledged that they owed £1,000 to citizens and vitners of London and they acknowledged that they owed another £3,000 to other London citizens, and payment was to be levied of their lands and chattels in co Worcester.[7]
Sir William died on 28 February 1337 and was buried at Tewkesbury Abbey, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England.[8]
