Biography

Octavius (aka Octavus) Morton was born in February 1842 in Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, Bahamas. He was baptized 26 June 1842 at the Methodist Church there.

There is some disagreement among genealogy researchers over who his parents were. They may have been Ezekiel Morton and Sarah Merrell. Some believe it was Benjamin Morton and Ann (Culmer) Morton because Octavius named several of his children after names of their children (Edward and Adillia) who would have been his siblings.

On the other hand, Octavius may be the brother of Bethia Morton (b. abt 1830) who was the daughter of Ezekiel Morton and Sarah Merrell and who married Judson Carey (b. 1825). Octavius was residing with Judson and Bethia in Key West, Florida - a 17-year-old mariner in the 1860 US Federal Census. His name was misspelled as Octonis.[1]

Octavius married Zenobia Roberts on 20 Nov 1862 in Monroe County, Florida. The marriage records misspelled her first name. They were married at the dwelling of W. H. Von Pfister. He was also the Justice of the Peace who married them.[2][3] A daughter, Margaret Morton, was born to the couple in Nov 1869. The family was living in the household of Abram and Mary Ann Roberts in 1870. They were most likely Zenobia's parents. [4]

Octavius married a second time to an Elizabeth Starling on 31 Dec 1872 in Levy County, Florida.[5]

He and Zenobia must have divorced as Zenobia did not pass away until 1925.

Octavius and Elizabeth had at least three children: Adilla, Edward and Octavius. They apparently divorced as well as Elizabeth married William Lowe on 3 Nov 1889 in Levy County, Florida, years before Octavius passed away.

Octavius Sr. passed away 1896 in Florida. The probate court in Hillsborough County, Florida in August, 1896, appointed S. A. Jeffords as administrator of the estate.[6]
