Richard Morton, born 1794 in Virginia; died Abt. 1880 in Bowen, Powell County, KY. He was the son of Capt. John Morton and Lucinda Blaekley. Captain John served in the Revolutionary War. After the Revolution he continued to make a living by farming.[1]
An article by the Kentucky Historical Society states that in 1792, Eli Cleveland and John Morton applied for a patent on 1,485 acres on a branch of Red River in Kentucky. In 1796, Captain John and Lucy sold 150 acres of land in anticipation of their move to Kentucky. Isaiah Morton, a son from the first marriage, was given Power of Attorney in June of 1798, to dispose of the 630 acre farm and home located on Sandy River. Captain John died within a short time after this matter was attended to. The rest of the family moved to Kentucky some time before September 1798." He married Cynthia Sallie Hon 29 Mar 1825
Note: According to research done by Edward and Mary Schoberg, "Richard Morton was born in Virginia and came to Kentucky with his mother and other family members when he was four years old. There is a discrepancy as to date of his death. One source has 1876 while another gives 1880. Richard and his brother Hezekiah married sisters (Hon). A notation in the minutes of the early Baptist Church, says Richard and his father-in-law, Joseph Hon were instrumental in establishing a church on the South Fork of Red River. This church would soon become part of the Restoration Movement begun by Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone in the early 1820's and '30's.
In 1829, Richard purchased 103 1/2 acres of land that joined the land that Hezekiah purchased at the same time. Richard also became the sole owner of his mother's property (no information at this time on how this happened). In 1865, he leased mineral rights on 1,000 acres, more or less, to Samuel J. Vaughn, Matthew McKinney and others of Estill County, KY. Richard and his wife Elizabeth sold these farms or portions of them to their sons, William and James Owen Morton in 1869." Richard's second wife, Cynthia Sallie Hon, was the daughter of Joseph Hon, Jr. (1774-1859) who was captured by Shawnee Indians along with his mother and sister, Kitty, and about 400 others at Ruddles Mill, KY in 1781 (during the Revolutionary War). Joseph Hon, Jr. eventually escaped and returned to his family, but his sister Kitty lived in captivity for 18 years."[2]
