Biography

When Aquilla Elizabeth Morton was born on July 13, 1878, in Stanly, North Carolina, her father, Baptist Rev. William Green Morton, was 37, and her mother, Sophia, was 38. She was born the 7th child and the first daughter of 9 children. Baby sister and youngest, Maggie, was the only other daughter. Her eldest brother Adam was 16 years older.

In the 1900 US Federal Census, Aquilla is 21 and the only of the children left living with her parents in Albemarle, North Carolina. Her father, Rev. Morton is listed as a farmer. Also living in the home is a John Cranford, age 30, a white servant. Aquilla is able to read and write.

In the fall of that year, Rev. Morton suffered a stroke from which he did not recover and by December had passed away, age 60. A little over a month later, on January 30, 1901, she marries at the age of 22.

She married James Lawerance Ganalia Ballard in her hometown.

Note from Family Bible

This is to certify that the rite of Holy Matrimony was celebrated between J.L.G. Ballard of Montgomery Co. & Aquilla Morton at Stanly Co. on the 30th day of Jan 1901 at the brides’ fathers by Rev M.F. Hotticock. Albemarle, NC Jan 30th 1901.

(Marriage records indicate that they were married by Rev. U.F. Hathcock) [1] The Hathcocks were relatives of her father, Rev. Morton. His mother (Aquilla's grandmother) was Susannah Hathcock.

They had five children in 13 years.

In 1910 census, they are living on and working their own rented farm on Wodeville Road in Mount Gilead with their 3 young daughters. They had five children in 13 years. Two sons died as infants and 3 daughters survived into adulthood. One son, William, died at birth. The second, and last child, Roy James, died at almost 10 months in 1917.

She lived near her husbands family in Mount Gilead until around 1930. By 1930, two daughters, Mabel and Bernice had married, and she and her husband Jim and their 25-year-old daughter Maude bought a home in Mineral Springs, NC. In 1935 they purchased and moved to another home in Ellerbe, NC.

Less than 10 years later, Aquilla died on February 14, 1943, in Ellerbe, North Carolina, at the age of 64, and was buried there.

  • Wodeville Road is probably a misspelling of Wadeville
  • Mineral Springs is in Ellerbe, North Carolina
  • The first name Aquilla may come from the surname Aquilla, but no connections have been established [1]
  • Shares her great-great grandfather's brother's wife (great great grand aunt) name on her mother's side, Aquilla Reese Lowther (Lowder), b 1714, d. 1747.
