Augustus Clayton Moss was born in Habersham County, Gerogia, the seventh son of Hudson Moss (1786-1863) and Nancy Greenwood (1785-1859). He married Rachel Banks (1827-1910) on Nov. 16, 1846 and had three children: John Scurry Moss (1855-1866), Nancy Ella Moss (1859-1944), and Sallie Ruth Moss (1864-unk).
Augustus was first a farmer in Habersham County, then moved to Chattooga County, Georgia, in 1852 where he farmed for about ten years. Returning to Homer, he enlisted on Aug. 19, 1863 as a private in McDonald's Company, 4th Georgia Cavalry (Blue Ridge Tiger Regiment) under Col. Robert White, and served for 6 months.
In 1864 he was elected Ordinary of Banks County and served in that office for the following ten years. In the later part of his life he continued to practice law in Homer.
