Disputed Origins

According to New Haven Vital Records, William Moss was born to Mercy Moss, son of John Moss, and Elizabeth (Curtis) Moss June 28, 1682 in New Haven, Connecticut.^[1] A different source, The History of the Old Town of Derby, Connecticut, shows him, incorrectly, to be the son of Joseph Moss (brother to Mercy Moss) and his wife, Mary Alling.^[2].

The confusion may have resulted from his father, Mercy's, unusual name which is more typically female. In fact, the History of Derby book does not even show Mercy to be a son of John Moss. Donald Lines Jacobus, however, does show the father-son relationship between John Moss and Mercy Moss (see below).

Biography

Sergeant William Moss was born June 28, 1682.^[3][4]

He died August 26, 1749.^[3][5][6]

William married first a woman who is unknown; by her he had his daughter Ann, born in 1710.^[7]

William next married Abigail Nichols (widow of Edward Riggs) on March 18, 1714, in Derby, New Haven, Connecticut.^[3][5][6][8]
