I went to take a photo of the shop at 23 Wentworth Street and there were workmen inside refurbishing it as the shop is currently to let. So I went inside to see the empty shop. It's just one room downstairs, with a flat on two storeys upstairs.
Coleman died of TB (phthisis).
The cemetery where Coleman is buried is closed and to visit the grave it is necessary to make an appointment via Bushey Cemetery Reception Office Tel: 0208 950 7767. I visited on 17 November 2015 and left three stones (Jewish tradition instead of flowers) near Coleman's gravestone as a mark of respect. The gentleman detailed to meet me was one of a leaf-blowing team and he warned me to be careful of foxholes buried under the leaves covering the turf - the cemetery did not seem to be maintained regularly. Coleman's grave is Section A Row 1 Grave 43. However, there is no map of the cemetery and the sections and rows are not marked in the graveyard. I was lucky: the leaf-blowing gentleman remembered the name and found Coleman's grave for me. The only way to find the grave is that it is towards the back of the cemetery on the left-hand side. It's currently (November 2015) just behind a grave which has several broken bits of gravestones piled on top of it.
Coleman Moses married Deborah Cohen on 26 August 1829 in the Hambro Synagogue. Source is the synagoguescribes website. His name was Kalonymus, known as Kalman, anglicised to Coleman. His father's name is given as Nathaniel. Deborah's father's name is given as Moshe Cohen. Coleman's address is given as 23 Wentworth Street, Whitechapel. 23 Wentworth Street is still a shop in Petticoat Lane Market, with a flat above the shop.
In the New and Hambro Synagogue marriage records, however, Deborah's father's name is given as Asher. Coleman's first name is spelt Colman. All other details are the same as in the synagoguescribes record. Ref for the synagogue record is Film 94667 ref 156.
1841 Census Coleman living at Grove Street (west side), Whitechapel. Coleman was a general dealer.
Death GRO ref is 2 67, registered at St George's in the East in June 1844 as Coleman Moses.
Coleman died of TB in the London Chest Hospital in Bonner Road, Bethnal Green. His address was then 132 Lower Grove Road, Whitechapel. Lower Grove Road is now Golding Street, near Cable Street.
Coleman is buried in Lauriston Road, Hackney Jewish Cemetery. Details are on the cemeteryscribes website, ref LK76. From the Hebrew inscription: Kalonymous ben Nathaniel died 21 Sivan 5603 (19 June 1843). English inscription: Coleman MOSES who died the 19 June 5609 aged 44 years. Respected by all who knew him. NB I think the apparent difference in the Hebrew year has happened because of weathering of the gravestone, making the 3 of the actual year look like a 9.
Another source of information on Coleman and his family is the Jewish Gen website.
