Andrew was born in Chandlerville, IL. It was a very cold winter and people cut ice on Wolf lake that was 22 inches thick. He attended Hickory Rule School in Chandlerville; Oakford school; Walnut Ridge school in Menard County; and graduated with honors from the 8th grade in Petersburg, IL. Then he went to work. He had a paper route in Petersburg. He helped farmers with corn harvesting and husking. Then Andy cooked for crews building levies, where he received the nickname "Kate". He worked for J. F. Ashmore hauling logs. He worked for the railroad and then on the farm of Dennis and Hubert Thomas for about four years. During the winter of 1936, which was cold and snowy, he delivered a lot of coal for friends and neighbors. Andy then worked for Donald Stroh driving a gasoline truck and in the station in Petersburg until enlisting in the 2nd Air Force. He was sworn into the service at Peoria, IL, on Feburary 17, 1942. He was sent first to Belleville, IL, then to McFord Field, Tacoma, Washington. Andy then went to Fort George Wright, Spokane, Washington where he was a Supply Sergeant and worked in Chemical Warfare. He then transferred to Great Bend, Kansas, working in Chemical Warfare. While at Great Bend he trained troops headed overseas in the proper use of gas masks. He was promoted to Tech Sergeant at Great Bend and then transferred to Headquarters, 2nd Air Force, in Colorado Springs, Colorado in September of 1944. Andrew received an honorable discharge from Lowery Field, Denver, Colorado on October 12, 1945. Among his other accomplishments while in the service, he helped create a special bomb mount and release cables which allowed five 100 pound bombs to be used instead of one 600 pounder. This assignment kept him from having to serve overseas. After his discharge, he worked with his brother Raymond building levies at Elsberry, Missouri. In 1946, he and his wife farmed near Black Oak, IL. In 1947 they farmed near New Canton, IL. They moved to a farm about 3 miles west of Hunnewell, Missouri in 1948 where he continued to farm until retirement in 1972.
