Biography

In his boyhood, his father settled in Halfmoon, Saratoga Co., NY. In 1808, he moved to the Haviland farm in Moreau, Saratoga Co., NY. He married Apr 27, 1804, Anstis, dau Joseph Merritt and granddaughter of Ichabod, one of the first permanent settlers of the Town of Queensbury which is now in Warren County, NY. Anstis died Feb 24, 1844.

James was a town Supervisor in 1813 and reelected through 1817 for that post. He was Town Justice of the Peace in 1815 and 1821. His biographical sketch states that, "He was active in the organization of the Society of Friends in Moreau, and died there April 12, 1872, closing "a peaceful, exemplary and eventful life.""

Besides their son, Richard, the couple had the following children:
