Biography

John Mott immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Cross of St George
John Mott was born in England.

John Mott was the son of Adam Mott and Elizabeth Creel. The following are recorded in the Parish register for Saffron Walden, Essex:[1][2]

10 Feb 1593/4 bpt Adam Walhead s/o John :28 Oct 1616 mar Addam Mott Elizabeth Ord/Creel

18 Jun 1617 bur "a man childe" Mott son of Adam
6 Sep 1618 bpt John Mott son Adam

In the shipping list, Adam Mott is stated to have come from Cambridge. He evidently belonged to the nearby Ezzes parish of Saffron Walden, where the surname occurs as far back as 1570 in the parish register.

Dictionary of New England Settlers. Volume 3 page 247 "..was first of Roxbury, freeman 25 May 1636; perhaps dissatisfied as a friend of Htchinson, went 1638 to Rhode Island with family; there had, perhaps, more children and was with Adam jr., John, and Jonathan, perhaps his sons living at Portsmouth, as freemen 1655."

MOTT. Page 344, 1st column John (2nd col.), son of Adam. The entries attributed to him by Austin refer to "ould John Mott" his grandfather. John, son of Adam, is named in his father's will dated 2:2mo.; 1661 (2 April 1661), which provides that his brothers shall pay him 20/ "if he demand it in such pay as in ye place passeth for pay here amonge us." This would seem to indicate that at this time John had removed from Rhode Island.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
