There were two men named Adam Mott who emigrated from England around the same time. This profile represents the Adam Mott born about 1623, who was the son of Adam Mott born 1594 at Saffron, Walden, England. The family emigrated from Horseheath, Cambridge to New England on the ship Defence in 1635. They lived first in Roxbury, Massachusetts, then removed to Hingham in 1636, settling in Portsmouth, Rhode Island in 1638.[1][2] The Rhode Island Adam Mott married his stepsister Mary Lott. There is a large Lott family in Long Island, New York, thus perhaps contributing to a bit of the confusion between the two Adam Mott lines.
The other Adam Mott, born 1620/1, emigrated from Essex County, arrived in 1638 on the ship Bevis, and settled in New York.[3] He was the son of James Mott and Grace Thurgar.[4]
The two Adam Motts were first cousins, sons of brothers Adam Mott and James Mott.
Adam Mott was born about 1623 in probably Saffron Walden, Essex, England. He was the son of Adam Mott born 1596 [1594],[5] the third son from his father's first marriage to Elizabeth Creel.[1]
In 1635, at age 12 (12 on 2 July 1635), Adam Mott emigrated from Horseheath, Cambridge with his father Adam Mott, a tailor, age 39, along with Sarah Mott, 31; John Mott, 14; Jonathan Mott, 9; Elizabeth Mott, 6; and Mary Mott, 4. They were passengers on the Defence,[6] and lived first in Roxbury, Massachusetts, then removed to Hingham in 1636, followed by Portsmouth in 1638, settling in Rhode Island.[1][2]
According to Austin, Anderson and Arnold, Adam Mott married in October 1647, Mary Lott,[1][2][7] his stepsister, who was recorded on the passenger list for the Defence.[1][6][2]
On 20 September 1652, Adam was deeded 12 acres of land in Portsmouth by his father and was a Deputy in Portsmouth in 1673.[1] In 1655, Adam Mott, Sr., and Adam Mott, Jr., were listed as Freemen of Portsmouth.[8]
Adam and Mary had the following children, all born at Portsmouth:[9]
Adam Mott died testate, having written a will on 24 February 1711. The will was proved on 8 September 1712 at Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island. Widow Mary Mott was named Executrix. He bequeathed 12 acres laid out to him by the townsmen of Portsmouth to his daughters, widow Sarah Tripp and widow Bethiah Abbott. He bequeathed new cotton and linen sheets to daughter Elizabeth Wing, and a similar legacy to daughter Abigail Hefferland. He gave a bed and a good ewe sheep to his maid, Dinah Stephens, and the rest of the movables to daughters Sarah Tripp and Bethiah Abbott.[1]

There wre two Adam Motts who came from England around the same time. The one born 1620 went to New York and settled there. This one, born 1623, went to Rhode Island. But it is interesting that this Rhode Island Adam married a younger Lott sister of a Lott who had settled and raised a large Lott family in Long Island, New York, thus perhaps contributing to a bit of the confusion between the two Adam Mott lines.
