Biography

Margritt (whose maiden name has not been located or substantiated accurately) was born about 1658 (before 1665 - since her first born Morgan was supposedly born in 1678 and 1665 would be the latest possible mother's birth date when considering a child-bearing age) as the daughter of unknown parents.[1][2] (See BIRTH research notes)

In 1693 (See a deed source that references a David Darnell and Marg'tt Darnell (referred to a Margarett in the deed of St Marys Par, Richmond County, transferring land to Hugh French, adjacent land of .... Sampson Darnell .... being part of Patent for Land lying in Rappahannock and Stafford Counties granted to Mr. Motts". I do NOT know if this is a matched source for this Margitt and husband David Darnell. Managers need to weigh in and either accept or deny. If accepted, a paragraph needs to be added here in the timeline.)

At some point in time, Margritt (Unknown maiden name) and David Darnell (later known as David Darnell Sr., married.[3][4]

After husband David's death in 1702, Margaret may have remarried a man named Thomas Stone. [1]

In 1702, Margritt's Will (1702) shows that her husband's name was David Darnell (referenced under the alternate spelling of i.e. Darnall-109) and that "Margritt Darnell", and their 4 living sons at the time of this will - Morgan, David Jr,, Joseph, and Waugh were all using the surname Darnell.[3] (Note that WikiTree shows at least 5 of 6 referenced names under the alternate spelling of Darnall for their profiles.)

Margritt died.[5]

Research Note

MAIDEN NAME: Unknown (NOT Mott)

Margritt's maiden name is uncertain but has been proven as NOT being Mott.[1] ::There are several unsourced user submitted trees on the internet that indicate the last name of Mott, this last name has been proven incorrect.
A previous bio sentence, made when doing in depth search for substantiated facts has been moved to under research notes where it belongs (Wendell-374, 12 Nov 2022):
My research indicates death year of 1724 for Margritt Mott (2 other notes say aft 03 Feb 1701/02 & 1724 in Richmond County, Virginia, USA).
As it appears that at the time these dates may have been under Margritt Mott ( They need to be viewed and properly referenced.) If MOTT has been proven to NOT be her maiden name, Mott should not be seen anywhere except under research notes.

MARRIED NAME: Darnell vs Darnall Margritt Darnell is the name on her 1702 will where she uses the spelling DARNELL (not Darnall), not only for herself but for her deceased husband David Sr. and their living sons Morgan, David Jr., Joseph, and Waugh.[3]

Could she be Margret Morgan?

As I don't think we have a concrete birth info for her, here is something for a Margret Morgan that may be of interest.
Maryland, Births and Christenings Index, 1662-1911 shows a Margret Morgan (born 29 Mar 1659 at Saint Pauls Parish Kent, Maryland, father's name Henry [Henry Morgan?][6] [[1]]

MARGRITT DARNELL'S WILL[3]:

See media - TYPED Will -Since it is typed, it is not a primary record but what appears to be the work of a H C Smith further researched by Sally Darnall Webb Federer -taken from Darnall-Darnall Family Vol 2. (912 pg Darnall Family Hx Book - Gateway 1979
I've lost the image. Can anyone find and provide a direct link image of this lost Margritt Darnell's Will into the bio?
I know that I provided the Will as a source somewhere at Wiki... for the life of me, I can't find. Her will needs to be found and an image linked to not only Margritt, but to each person mentioned in her will. (I believe I added the will when we were all attempting to prove spelling of husband and family surname. This source showed name to be DARNELL.

BIRTH:

Half of the Ancestry.com trees that are researching this line, elude to her name being Margret Morgan with a date of birth as 29 Mar 1659 in Saint Pauls Parish, Kent, Maryland and a father Henry Morgan (the others morphing records of Doniphan, Morgan, Darnall and Mott as if they have no clue that this combination of names remains incompatible. I have not processed the records in these 26 trees that I have found to see if in fact her name is substantiated as Morgan and/or if the date of birth and location and father are truly substantiated. Managers and others with interest might want to look into that. I may or may not have found the source but don't know how to substantiate if it is really this Margritt. Can anyone try to find through family search or another favorite location to see if you can pull this together? Could her name be Morgan? Are there additional records for a Margret Morgan with father Henry out there that could be perused in an attempt to rule in or out a new possible connection to someone besides Mott? Could Doniphan's wife have been a Margret Morgan, instead of Margaret Mott? Here's the source of interest: [7]

CHILDREN: Morgan Darnell, David Darnell, Waugh Darnell and Joseph Darnell

I know as fact that these three sons, she, and her husband were all referred to as having surname Darnell. Her will substantiates this fact.[3]
Joseph Darnell appears to need his own profile with subsequent linking to these parents. Which spelling version of his surname is to be used for his original birth name? ... Darnell (as substantiated in his mother's 1702 will) OR Darnall (Is there any source that substantiates this spelling?)

POSSIBLE DEED RECORD MATCH: Managers need to weigh in on this and accept or reject this source as a match for THIS Margitt and husband David Darnell.

Note: If it is accepted, I suggest that a visual of the record be imbedded into this bio timeline along with a properly worded paragraph. (I won't be doing this. Wendell-374, 12 Nov 2022)

I do NOT know if this is a matched source for this Margitt and husband David Darnell. Managers need to accept or deny. If accepted, a paragraph needs to be added into the timeline of this bio.)

This is the direct transcription of the record as it is shown : Interesting that it names all the names that cause confusion in this What was Margitt's maiden name debacle.

Can anyone find and provide a direct link image of Margritt Darnell's Will into the bio?

I've lost the image and URL but know that I referenced when we were all proving the spelling of her husband and their children's names as DARNELL. I know that will is out there. I know it was her will, not her husband's ... so the date 1702 may be that when he died, she had her own will registered.

My own personal notes (where I've Lost the image) and my Ancestry contribution said: "See media - TYPED Will -Since it is typed, it is not a primary record but what appears to be the work of a H C Smith further researched by Sally Darnall Webb Federer -taken from Darnall-Darnall Family Vol 2. (912 pg Darnall Family Hx Book - Gateway 1979". It is important to get connected to this profile.

I think we have many Margaret, Margritt, Margarette Mott women to connect on their correct family branch? When I was reading old books and manuscripts 5+ years ago, through Mocavo (what I consider to have been the best resource for Darnell and Calvert research) I penciled in a Margritt (not Margaret) Morgan Mott next to David Darnall Sr. name with no other information. Mocavo went under and my tree and shoe box went somewhere - don't know if I will ever get my 2 years of concentrated research back. I might be able to contribute more someday. Has anyone come across a Margritt Morgan or Margritt Morgan Mott related to Calverts, Darnalls, or Pigg? I think she might be key to figuring out placement of our Margritts.

In my searches I am using Margaret Morgan and have her as a daughter of George Mott and Elizabeth Pigg. I do not know where she got the name of Morgan, but that is what was listed tracking mg lines I found this Margaret going to my family in the Crockett's. Sampson Crockett of Maryland had a sister Margary married a Noah Dodge and as the children married, they connected the Crockett line with the Darnell line.

Does anyone have access to Margritt's 1702 will?I just saw a note that might be paramount in our decision as to the spelling of the "Darnall-Darnell" surname.

BEFORE ANY FURTHER DARNALL-DARNELL NAME CHANGES TAKE PLACE.... MARGRITT DARNALL/DARNELL'S 1702 WILL MUST BE REVIEWED VISUALLY. The note says "In her 1702 Will found in Deed Book #3, pg 102, Richmond, VA, Margritt used the spelling DARNELL, not Darnall, not only for herself but for her deceased husband David Sr. and their living sons Morgan, David Jr, Joseph, and Waugh."

Removed the father on this profile as he was merged into another incorrect George Mott.

As it appears we are not to correct or add info to specific "works being handled by others", I put my feelings here. I believe they were married in the Province of Maryland , not Virginia. A brief explanation of St Mary's, St Mary's County, Province of Maryland. The Province of Maryland was an English and later British colony in North America that existed from 1632 until 1776. According to Wiki The land where the Conoy Indians lived became the English settlement of Lord Baltimore's Maryland with the arrival of passengers who had set sail on the Ark and the Dove from the Isle of Wight on 22 Nov 1633. St Marys the city became it's first city .

I saw 29 Mar 1659 at St Mary's, Maryland for her birth and entered on my work sheets ... but ... wrote it before I understood the importance of "sourcing". I am sure it will surface again when I go through and do a final cross check with my "processed" papers but that won't be happening soon. I know without a source, it hold no value ... just a comment.

Mott-671 and Mott-737 appear to represent the same person because: same husband's name, birth is more like 1660, would have made her 16 when she married rather than 10
