John is often reported to be the son of Matthias Moyer, whose grave is identified in Plain, Wayne, and who is believed to have had a son John born 25 Sep 1777, Lower Providence, Montgomery, PA.[1]
A biography prepared in 1884 for John's son, Jesse, records that :
[Jesse's] parents, John and Sarah (Royer) Myers, were natives of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and had thirteen children, only four of whom are now living.[2][3]
1810[4] : (possible census record) In Mt Pleasant, Westmoreland, PA : John Myres (age 26-44). Also in the household :
1 female aged 26-44 (presumed to be Sarah)
3 males under 10 (presumed to be Matthias, Mahlon and Jesse)
2 females under 10 (presumed to be Elizabeth + one other)
John left Westmoreland Co., PA to move to Wayne Co., Ohio, in April 1819, where he settled in Plain Twp. He was the first person in Wayne County to grow grafted fruit, and ran a successful nursery business until his death in 1847.[5] It's likely he is the person referred to as "Appletree Moyer".
Note
Evidence needed to support use of middle initial "P".
Albert[6] notes that the "Mennonist" settlers in East Huntingdon came from Lancaster County, and specifically mentions settlers by the name Moyers / Meyer / Myers in connection with that community.
One of the pieces of evidence for identifying John as the son of Matthias is the fact that a Matthias Moyer purchased land in Mt Pleasant, Westmoreland in 1813, some years after John moved there. How do we know this was John's father (who would then have been aged almost 60) and not a brother or cousin?
