Seven Cherokee in London

Biography

Tistoe was born about 1680. His ancestry & family are unknown. He was one of seven Cherokee chiefs who went to London, England in May 1730 at the request of Sir Alexander Cuming. Cuming had persuaded the Cherokee to let him give Moytoy the title of “Emperor,” and he wanted to take the Cherokee emperor with him to London, England as proof. [1]... “The Indians hesitated at taking so long a journey ... Moytoy refused to go because of the illness of his wife. Finally, Oukou-naco, “The White Owl” [later known as Attakullakulla] consented to go. Six others said that he should not be compelled to go alone. Accordingly, Kitagista, Oukah-Ulah, Tiftowe, Clogoitah, Onokanowin and Oukounaco agreed to accompany Cuming”. [2]

While in London the Cherokee dined with the King, were given fine clothes, and taken to tourist attractions such as the Tower of London and Canterbury Cathedral. On 07 Sep 1730 they signed a trade agreement and headed home. The Cherokee arrived back in Charlestown on 11 May 1731 [3] and Tistoe fades from the record. By 1755 all of the travelers except Attakullakulla were dead. [2]

His name is spelled many different ways ...

- “Tiftowe” [2]
- "Tethtowe” appears on the “Articles of Friendship” signed in London 07 Sep 1730.

Now that he's merged and cleaned up can we change his LNAB to Cherokee?

These profiles are clearly meant to be the same man and should be merged.

Moytoy-213 and Moytoy-5 appear to represent the same person because: Can you please check if these are duplicated profiles ? Thanks

Yes, the source is probably to his son, which we dont know of at this point.

Unlikely that the person in this profile is the one referred to in the source, who was alive in 1759 and a warrior - he would have been 80 years old. Think this profile refers to the man who went to London with Cuming.
