Biography

Cornelis was born in the Netherlands, circa 1638 or 1639. WikiTree profile Muller-1226 stated that he was born in 1639 in Nijkerk, Gelderland, Netherlands.

According to Schulze, Cornelis Stevense Mulder was in New Amsterdam as early as 6 June 1660 when he was asked by Jeremias Van Rensselaer to lease on his behalf the farm of Cornelis Antonissen Van Slyke aka Broer Cornelis.[1] However, Getty states that correspondence between Jeremias Van Rensselaer and his brother Jan Baptist indicates that he arrived in New Netherland in January 1661 on the ship De Hoop.[2] In an account written in August 1662, Jeremias Van Rensselaer mentioned Cornelis Mulder as his servant.[3]

Cornelis Stephense Muller was of ’t Greyn Bos (now Greenbush, Rensselaer County, New York) as of 1663.[4][5]

He married Hilletje Pieterse Loockermans in New York in 1670.[4][5][2][6] Twelve children are attributed to their marriage.[2]

On 21 September 1671 a lawsuit was brought against him and Jacques Jennyn to establish the paternity of a child of Styntje Claes. The court could not decide which man was the father so they found both guilty and sentenced each to pay a weekly amount towards the child's support, and to provide the child with suitable clothing and equipment for three years.[1]

Cornelis Mulder settled in Claverack, New York. On 22 October 1718 he bought 1000 acres of farmland and woodland in Claverack from Hendrick Van Rensselaer (young Patroon of the Lower Manor).[2] He also owned a large lot on Broadway, Albany.[4] He was of Claverack in 1720,[4][5] so he apparently died after that date.

Mueller-887 and Mulder-765 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge into the NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. But from this match we should keep all three previously established data points, Born 1639 in Nijkerk, Gelderland, Netherland, married 1670 in New York, USA, Died after 1720 in Claverack, Columbia County, New York, USA. Thanks!

Mueller-887 and Mulder-765 clearly represent the same person. However, I question the designation of Mueller as the preferred LNAB. If this person was born in Holland, it's unlikely that he was called by the German Mueller; Muller or Mulder seems more likely.

The only source cited here before now is Reynolds, who reportedly gives his name as "Cornelis Stephense Muller." Frijhoff (p. 38) gives his name as "Cornelis Stephensz Mulder or Muller." The Van Alen Family in America (p. 15) has his name as Cornelis Stephense Mulder.

Both the Muller and Mulder names appear in modern Dutch records. http://www.ancestry.com/name-origin?surname=muller and http://www.ancestry.com/name-origin?surname=mulder leave me with the impression that Mulder is the more genuinely Dutch name.

Mueller-1201 and Mueller-887 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge. No tree conflicts. These matches have been reviewed by the New Netherland Settlers Merge Approval System, and the "Green" destination NNS profile is protected as PPP, and the "Merge Pending" profile is now ready and able to be merged into it. I saved the data to the bios. Thanks!
