Biography

Mary Agnes Mullins married Edward Polly (1758-1845) in 1784 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. She began receiving a Revolutionary War Widows pension of $30 on 19 May 1845. The payment schedule shows it was paid through at least March 1848.

Mary Agnes was called both Mary and Agnes.

On 26 May 1829 Edward Polly, Sr. was living in Pike County, Kentucky. On 7 June 1847 Mary Polly, about 80, of Letcher County, Kentucky, applied for a pension stating that she married Edward Polly in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, before he was discharged from the army, and he died 19 May 1845. Joshua Mullins deposed that Mary Polly was his sister, that he was about 100 years old (but see his pension application) and two or three years older than his sister. In this and other documents Edward Polly is referred to as David Polly, and Mary Polly is referred to as Agnes Polly. On 4 Mar 1850 Mary Polly, 82, applied again for a pension, stating that she was married to Edward Polly in 1784 by a Baptist minister named Bailey. The file includes a copy of a deed dated 16 Apr 1787 by which Edward and Agnes Polly sold to Daniel Witcher 250 acres in Pittsylvania County. In certifying this deed Mary Polly stated on 6 Mar 1851 that she and Edward Polly were married in 1784 and had 12 children as follows, the first five of whom were born before 1794: Sally, Andrew, Polly, Agnes, Henry, Raney, Joseph, Edward, Vina, Nancy, Susanah, and David. In a document dated 6 Mar 1851 David Polly of Letcher County is said to have been 42 years old.

Please see her husband's profile for more information about her. Her birth year is estimated from the 1850 census (age 85) and the birth of her last child in 1810.

A researcher claimed she later remarried a Hall. This was looked into and no proof was found to support this information. So the Hall name have been removed from the profile.

Thanks. I've looked into it. She did not remarry, and I'm unable to find any family tree at Ancestry that shows her name as Hall at any time in her life. I couldn't find a tree that gave Edward a wife of any other name than Mary a.k.a. Agnes Mullins. Given their age difference it's conceivable he had a prior marriage but there's nothing at all proposed along those lines. Given this, any connection to Hall is so weak that I think it's OK to remove it. In cases of dispute the bio can/should contain a discussion but there is no a dispute so I'm not even sure it should be mentioned in the bio. If something turns up in the future the profile can be updated. The profile shows what facts we know.

While merging the two profiles, this profile had Hall as an additional married name. I have no research to support this claim, but I have not researched to see if she did remarry after Edward's death. So I cannot disprove this name either. And, if she did remarry was this before or after filing for a widow's pension.

Does anyone know why her last name has Hall in it?
