Biography

William was born about 1751 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. He was the son of William M. Mullins and Katherine Elizabeth Varner. In the 1810 census William was in Floyd, Floyd, Kentucky, United States.[1] In the 1820 census William was in Floyd, Kentucky, United States.[2]He died about 1830 in Floyd County, Kentucky, United States.

Research Notes

From the comments on this profile he was the son of William, and was not Coonie Bill who was the son of Ambrose.

William was the paternal fifth great-grandfather of Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle.

Why does he have Martha Winbush attached as a daughter? Did not find any sources for her. I did some checking on her. Her fathers name is Samuel Winbush.

I did some checking on William's father William on FAG. He had a son but he is just mentioned. No FAG for him.

William and Elizabeth had the following known children:

8. i. William Mullins Jr. b. ca 1751 Virginia - d. prior to 19 Aug. 1840 Franklin County, Virginia

9. ii. John "Buttin' John" Mullins b. ca 1750 Virginia - d. 1849 Clintwood, Russell County, Virginia

10. iii. Ambrose Mullins b. ca 1758 Virginia - d. after 1835 Russell County, Virginia

11. iv. Nancy Mullins b. ca 1750 Virginia

12. v. Booker Mullins b. ca 1768 Virginia - d. during the Civil War in Wise County, Virginia

It gives Katherine Varner as wife.

Two edits were made on 26 Feb 2023 that do not appear to have been coordinated, and do not appear to have been accompanied by reliable sources, and now appear inconsistent with the biography and data fields:
  • Katherine Mullins (Varner-198) was removed as the mother
  • The status indicator for attached father William M. Mullins was changed to non-biological.

Could someone familiar with this profile and that of the parents please clean this up, or reverse the edits if should not have been made.

I can understand why Varner-198 would be detached as his mother. His mother was Elizabeth Scott, and she was named in her father’s will. I wonder why someone would set his father as non-biological?

There’s been no input from profile managers, the project, or Mullins descendants about resolving the issue with Mullins-340 which represents the best detailed information as the son of William Mullins-570. I added issues under the Research Notes on Mullins-340 over a year ago. Even if this gets resolved, there’s erroneous connections and information on Mullins-570’s ancestors.

Kathy Bond has proposed that the William Mullins who was the son of William Mullins is the same William whose estate was probated in Franklin County, Virginia, in 1830, currently represented by William Mullins. If this is correct, then this profile would either need to be merged into Mullins-340, or detached from the current parents. There are no sources currently cited in the profile. Is there any source to support the claim that there was in fact a William Mullins who died in Floyd County, Kentucky, on 2 Dec 1830? If so, what is the basis for the claim that that man was the son of Mullins-570? A merge between these profiles was apparently previously proposed and rejected, although it's not clear why. We are trying to sort this out. If anyone is interested in collaborating on this effort, or can provide any sources to support the claims in this profile, please weigh in.

Scott, I don't know anything about this family. However, a quick search shows that there were two William Mullins living in Floyd County, Kentucky in 1820, along with several other Mullins (Booker, David, Solomon, John, Joshua). See this page of the 1820 census; https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/279809?token=bd283a2c823ae429173a844da9e41565860d7205ff0e06d24f482236db429b7f for one of them along with the others mentioned. And on this page we have Marshall, Isham, and Williams Mullins in the 1820 Floyd, KY census: https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/279842?token=d97729f0fdba930577bc80042093720863ab40e7b42f0d927679d91c81fa64da

There is a Booker Mullins who married Judith Stanley on 12 May 1803 in Franklin, Virginia. (Source: Dodd, Jordan R., et al.. Early American Marriages: Virginia to 1850. Bountiful, UT, USA: Precision Indexing Publishers)

Find-a-Grave has a memorial for a William "Coonie Bill" Mullins born 1766 VA, died 1850 Floyd, KY, married to Rutha Foster: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/134991332/william-mullins

All that said, my guess is two men have been conflated.

I’ve been searching for a William Mullins who died in 1830 in Floyd, Ky and haven’t been able to locate him. William “Coonie Bill” was the son of Ambrose Mullins and they were genetically from the Mathew Mullins line. What I know to be true is that William Mullins Jr, son of William Sr did not live (or die) in Kentucky.

I am going to reach out to other contacts to see if anyone has a William who died in 1830.

Booker was “Little Book” Mullins, my 3rd great grandfather and he died in Franklin County, Va. in 1867. He was the son of William Mullins Jr. and Jane Stanley. I have sources for Booker and many of his descendants.

Katlynn, I haven't located a William Mullins who died in 1830 in Floyd, KY either. But we know there was a William Mullins in that county .And that is why I think two (or more) men have been conflated, and the 1830 death is wrong or the location is wrong, but there should be a profile for the William Mullins that was in Floyd, KY. I'll leave it up to the family researchers to try and figure it out.
I agree. I’ve been looking at the changes made to Mullins-1499 since it was created. After two mergers and multiple changes, I see it was originally added with birth year 1751. The death year and place, 1830, Floyd, Ky.were added later. Also we know IDs are sequentially numbered. I am convinced that Mullins-340 was meant to be William Jr. His father is Mullins-570 and his father is Mullins-339. Thanks for the reply.

Mullins-1587 and Mullins-1499 appear to represent the same person because: Same death date.

Mullins-1804 and Mullins-1499 appear to represent the same person because: Merge always into lower number.

Mullins-1499 and Mullins-1804 are not ready to be merged because: you have unknown mother and no wife.

William "Coonie" Bill Mullins b. abt. 1767 died Abt. 1857 in Floyd Co., KY. He married Rutha 'Ruth' Foster 19 April 1821 in Floyd Co., KY.

This William is the s/o Ambrose Mullins and "unknown".

These people keep getting merged and they aren't the right people.

I'm about ready to give up ....

Mullins-1804 and Mullins-1499 do not represent the same person because: Coonie Bill is the son of AMBROSE.

William Mullins Sr.aka Coonie Bill b. ca 1776 Virginia - d. late 1856 or early 1857 KY md Rutha Foster Man oh man these people are getting SO messed up!!!
