Biography

John Mullins Jr. is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

John Mullins, Jr. was born in Albemarle County in 1782, the son of John Mullins, Sr. (1749/50-1835 who dies in Giles County, Virginia) and Mary Sarah or Sarah Ballard (1758-1809).

He lives in Pearisburg, Giles County, Virginia in the 1810 and 1820 US Census.

He may have served in the War of 1812 in the 1 Regiment (Yancey's) Virginia Militia, but many other John Mullinses from Virginia also served and hard to distinguish.

In 1814-1815 John married Martha Ann Bradshaw (1785-1865) about 1814. Their children included:

  1. James Frank Mullins (Dec 1814 in Giles County, Virginia - after 1900 in West Virginia)
  2. Mourning Mullins (1816 in Giles County, Virginia - 1883)
  3. George Washington Mullins (1820 in Virginia - 1855)

In the 1840 US Census there is a man in his 60's in the household of his son James Mullins in Giles County, Virginia, and in the 1850 US Census John is age 75 and lives with his 38 year old son James Mullins and family in Giles County, Virginia. He is not listed in his son James' household in the 1860 US Census (nor the 1870 US Census).

There is another John Mullins in the 1850 US Census in District 7, Grundy County, Tennessee with wife Martha A. Mullins but no Mullins children. Then there is a John Mullins who died in Grundy County, Tennessee in 1857. It is not clear if this is a different John Mullins or the same one as John's sister Millie and other Mullins relatives also moved to Grundy County.

Notes

This is probably not the John Mullins born about 1775 in Goochland, Virginia, the son of John Mullins and Elizabeth Connolly, because he appears in Goochland in the 1810 and 1820 US Censuses whereas our John Mullins appears in Giles County, VIrginia those same years.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
