St Thomas à Becket |
Robert Leyborne Mundy only son of Sir Robert Miller Mundy and his wife, Isabella Leyborne Popham was born in 1852 [1][2] on the 16th of February [3] and was baptised at St Thomas à Becket in Warblington on the 21st of March. [4] He was the only son in a large family of daughters. [5]
When Robert was fourteen he joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman [6] and was promoted sub-Lieutenant on 2 May 1866. [3] He first went to sea aboard HMS Royal Alfred, the flagship of his much older cousin, Admiral Rodney Mundy.[6] (they were both grandsons of Edward Miller Mundy MP). He saw service aboard Vestal, Agincourt and Seaflower on the North American and West Indian Stations and in October 1873 volunteered for special service aboard Commodore William Hewett's flagship, Active, on the West African Station.[6]
Active participated in naval operations during the Third Anglo-Ashanti War of 1874 and some of her crew were landed to reinforce the forces ashore. [7] Robert was among them. He was shot in the head during the battle of Amoaful fought on 31 January 1874 and lingered until just past his 22nd birthday, dying on the 17th of February. [6]
