Early Years

John began his life in Scott County, Kentucky on his parents farm. He was the the second of eleven children born to James and Adeline.

Sometime after the birth of his sister Amanda, also born in Scott County, in 1856, but before the U.S. Census of 1870, Johns father moved the family from Scott County to Owen County.[4]

When the U.S. Census of 1870 was taken, John, age 16, was working on his parents farm, valued at $2,500.00, in Owen County, Kentucky. His four sisters; Amanda "Mandy", Sarah "Sadie" C, Alice B, Louisa B, and two brothers; M. Paschal, and Edwin L, were all living in the family home.[4]

His oldest sister, Willina is not listed on this census. It's not clear what happened to her. She may have passed away prior to 1870. No information about her has been located, including the 1860 census for this family.[4]

One more sister, Harriet B, and two brothers, Walter S, and Tilden H, were born after the 1870 census.[5]

Marriage

John B Munson was 20 years old when he married Armelda Watson on November 15, 1874, in Owen County, Kentucky.[6]

Family

John and his wife Armelda stayed in Owen County after their marriage, and settled on a farm in the Harmony Precinct.

Their first child, Williard, was born in 1876, and Winfred was born in 1878.

John was 26, and Armelda was 19, when the 1880 U.S. Census was taken. His son Willard was four and Winfred was two. There was also a boarder, John Moreland, living in their home.[7]

Amanda "Mandy" Munson, Johns sister, died in 1880 before the census taker arrived on June 24, 1880 in the Caney district of Owen County. The 1880 census, Note B - "All persons will be included in the Enumeration who were living on the 1st day of June, 1880. No others will. Children BORN SINCE June 1, 1880, will be OMM ITTED. In 1884, his sister, Louisa, married Walter W Watson, the brother of his wife, Armelda.

Johns sister, Alice, married James B House in 1886.[9]

The tragic deaths of Johns sister, Louisa and her two children, occurred in 1890.

John had relocated with his family to Lusbys Mill, Owen County, by 1900. The U.S. Census of that year show him, his wife, son Winfred, and two daughters Katie, and Mable, in the home.[10]

His oldest son Willard was not in the home anymore, and two girls Katie and Mable were born between 1880 and 1900.

In 1909, Johns youngest brother, Tilden, married Alma Somhorst in Ohio.[11]
