Biography

Timothy Munson was born in Connecticut.
1776 Project
Private Timothy Munson served with 6th Connecticut Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Timothy was born 1 July 1734 in New Haven, Connecticut.[1] His parents were John Munson and Esther Clark. He was baptized Jul 7 1734 in New Haven. [2]

Timothy married Sarah Bishop on 17 July 1754 in New Haven, CT. Sarah was the daughter of Willet & Elizabeth (Sturdevant) Bishop. She was baptized Jul 18 1736 in New Haven, Connecticut. She died Feb 5 1806, age 60.[2]

Timothy and Sarah had 10 children:

  1. Sarah (b. 1756),
  2. Huldah (b. 1758),
  3. Lucena,
  4. Dorcas,
  5. Electa (b. 1765),
  6. Temperance (b. 1766),
  7. Timothy (b. 1767),
  8. Ruth (b. abt 1768-1858) m. David Stannard,
  9. John Clarke (b. 1774), and
  10. Martha (aka Patty, b. 1777).[3]

In 1763, Timothy lived in Brookfield, Connecticut[2]

The U.S. Census for 1780, indicates that Timothy was residing in Pownal, Vermont,[4]and was still residing in Pownal in 1782. [2]

Timothy married his second wife, Sarah Adams sometime after his first wife's death in 1806. His second wife, Sara, died on 2 March 1819 at age 71. [2] There are no known children in this union.

Timothy served at least two terms in the Revolutionary War as a member of the 8th Co., 5th Continental Regiment from 9 May to 13 Oct 1775 as a Sergeant, and as a Private in the 6th Regiment, Connecticut Line for 11 months from 1777-1778.[3][5]

Timothy was a carpenter, tailor, and an innkeeper; the Munson Tavern in Pownal, Vermont served as his home and business after the family's move from Connecticut about 1782.[3]

Timothy died on 29 October 1826 in Pownal, Vermont [6] [2]

Timothy is buried in Pownal Center Cemetery, Pownal Center, Bennington County, Vermont [7]
