Biography

William Murphree was part of a Southern Pioneer Family.

Birth

William was born about 1743 in Bertie, North Carolina[1]

Marriage

He married around 1760 to Hannah (last name unknown). Their known children are William (b. 1762, md. Sarah Linn), John and Jesse.

South Carolina

In 1790, William Murphree purchased 439 acres of land along 12 Mile Creek. [2].

Murphree named the land "Seconia" after the nearby Cherokee Soconey Village. Oral history dates the church to 1786, it entered the Bethel Association in 1791. William was one of the first members along with Joseph Duncan and Joseph Price. William served as the first pastor from 1791-1807. Of his departure, Jean Martin Flynn writes
"Church leadership changed. William Murphree moved on in 1807. His departure was not sudden. On January 13, 1802, Turner Harwood in special confidence with his "trusty" friend, William Murphree, appointed him his attorney to recover debts, lands, and premises he had in the State of Tennessee."
[3]

William Murphree is said to have sold off the following tracts of land:

  • To Mary Murphree and Elijah Murphree, administrators of Levi Murphree, deceased, 100 acres for $50 July 12, 1805.
  • To Aron Murphree 588 acres on Rock Bridge Branch of Twelve Mile River for $300 January 21 1806.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Update: Also this profile better fits under Southern Pioneers project, not US Southern Colonies, but Pioneers does not appear to have a sticker.

Murphree-1133 and Murphree-507 do not represent the same person because: They are father and son. Murphree-507 needs detached from Sarah Linn and made the father of the younger William.

Murphree-1133 and Murphree-507 appear to represent the same person because: while there is some discussion about where he was born, he is married to the same woman and both profiles agree that his place of birth needs research

I believe we are missing a generation here. Rev. William Jr (1762-1800+) md. Sarah Linn. These are the parents of Allen. But this birthdate is for William Sr, Wm Jr.'s father. William Sr. ( 1743-bef 1834) md Hannah. I am looking at http://www.murphree.us/william%20murphree1.html on the Murphree Genealogical Assn. website.
