Biography

Pvt. David Murphy served in the United States Civil War.

David Daniel Murphy was born on 05 Sep 1819 in Jefferson County, Kentucky. He was the son of David P. Murphy and Susan Wing.

He married Elizabeth "Nellie" Groves on 04 Mar 1844 in Paulding County, Ohio.[1] Together they had at least the following children:[2]

  1. George Murphy (b. ~1847)
  2. Levi Murphy (b. ~1850 - 12 Jan 1934)

At the time of the 1850 Census the family was living in Greensburg, Putnam County, Ohio where he worked as a farmer.[2] At the time of the 1860 Census he and his sons were living in a hotel in Kalida, Putnam County, Ohio where he worked as a carpenter. His wife was no longer with him.[3]

He joined the 57th Ohio Infantry on 27 Feb 1864. He was assigned as a Private with Company A. He mustered out with his company on 14 Aug 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas.[4]

Following the war he returned to Putnam County, Ohio. He married Harriet E. (Walker) Sipes on 29 Aug 1866 in Putnam County.[5] Together they had at least the following children:[6][7][8][9][10][11][12]

  2. William David Murphy (01 Jun 1870)
  3. Emma Murphy (14 Oct 1872)
  4. John W. Murphy (15 Jun 1875)
  5. Nancy (Murphy) Mault (b. ~1878)
  6. Josiah Murphy (01 Aug 1881)
  7. Amanda E. (Murphy) Foust (15 Sep 1884 - 01 Jun 1921)

At the time of the 1870 Census he was living in Jackson Township, Putnam County, Ohio where he worked as a carpenter.[6] He still lived there, but had taken up farming, by 1880.[10] He still lived there in 1890.[13]

He passed away on 25 Jan 1894. He is buried at Union Township Cemetery, Kalida, Putnam County, Ohio.[14][15]
