Alfred John Murphy was born in 1854 to Michael Murphy and Ann Maria (Lawrence) Murphy. His mother died within days of his birth, and he was taken to raise by his uncle and aunt, George Harper and Caroline (Lawrence) Harper.[1]
At some point he took the Harper name.
Alfred immigrated to Australia, arriving on Oct. 2, 1879.[2]
He took as his wife Lucy Sophia Moor. Together they became the parents of Alfred Harold "Harry" Harper, Alfred William Harper, Caroline Lawrence (Harper) Wheatley, George Reginald Harper, and Ellen S. Harper.[3]
He and Lucy married in 1897.[4] Their family grew with the births of William Reginald Harper, Agnes Harper, Lucy Annie Harper, and Robert Harper.[5]
Alfred passed away on Apr. 9, 1917 in Junction, New South Wales[6] and was buried at Sandgate Cemetery in Newcastle, New South Wales.

Death of Mr. A. J. Harper.
Mr. Alfred J. Harper, an old and respected resident of the Newcastle district, died yesterday at his residence, Patrick Street, Junction. The deceased had been employed in the dredge service of the Harbours and Rivers Department for many years, and was a member of the Rosebud Lodge (Wickham) of the Grand United Order of Free Gardeners for a considerable time. He is survived by his widow and a large family of sons and daughters. The funeral, which took place this afternoon, was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. The interment was in the Methodist section of Sandgate Cemetery.
