Charles was born in Shoalhaven New South Wales on 24 Apr 1856 to parents James MURPHY and Elizabeth KENNEDY.[2]

We don't know much about Charles' early life. It isn't until after the death of his mother and the subsequent trial of his father for her murder, that we find him living in Back Forest, Shoalhaven in April 1875. By 9th September of that same year he has enlisted with the NSW Police. The NSW Police records show the following information:-

* NSW Police, 2621, enlisted 9 Sep 1875 –
* Description: blue eyes; black hair; fair complexion
* Height: 5 ft. 9 in.
* Birth: 1854, NSW
* Occupation: Horse breaker
* District: South Western
* Religion: RC
* General appearance: Good
* Constable: 9 Sep 1875

He is found living in Deniliquin in 1876, believed to have been posted there at time of Ned Kelly siege, protecting the border.

By 1 February 1880 he is appointed to a 1st class constable. However, the records show he was dismissed on 1st Sep 1880. The cause of the dismissal is unknown.[3]

By 1891 he is back living with his father at 38 Rockford St MacDonaldtown at the time of his death on 10th October.

Charles was unmarried at the time of his own death from senile decay, cardiac failure on 19th Mar 1919, aged 63, presumed no issue. He died at Randwick and was buried in the Roman Catholic Section of Rookwood Cemetery on 21st March.[4][5]
