Biography

William James MURPHY, son of Denis Murphy and Jane Elizabeth Wheelock, was baptised/christened on 14 November 1841 at the combined parish Church of Mayglass and Ballymore, County Wexford, Ireland, with sponsors James Stafford and Mary Dillon.

William MURPHY married Sarah HARRISON on 25 Apr 1865 at St Francis Church Melbourne (Vic Registry of BDM reg no 1865/1723). Sarah HARRISON was 19 years old. She was born c 1846 in Dalry, County Ayrshire, Scotland, to William HARRISON and Sarah HARRISON (nee DAVIDSON) . At 12 years of age, Sarah emigrated to Victoria from Scotland aboard the ‘Herald’ with her parents, brothers and sisters arriving in Geelong Victoria in June 1859 . Both William and Sarah resided at Hotham, North Melbourne. William’s occupation at the time was a cab man or cab proprietor. His father Dennis’ occupation at that time was a farmer. The witnesses were Patrick MOYLAN and Catherine DUNN .

William James MURPHY died at 67 years of age at Woodstock, Shire of Epping, Victoria, Australia, on 17 July 1909. The cause of his death was chronic bronchitis, the duration of which was 2 years. His occupation was shown on his death certificate as a labourer. William had lived in Victoria for 55 years after emigrating from Ireland, with his parents in 1855. He is buried in the Epping Public Cemetery , Victoria. The Register of Burials for the Epping Cemetery, entry no 149 for 1909, shows the burial of William MURPHY on 20 Jul 1909, aged 67, late residence Woods Point, occupation miner, cause of death chronic bronchitis, denomination RC, with a note that he is ‘buried in grave with C. [Christopher] Jeffers (near O’Sullivan)’

A 'Birth and Baptismal Certificate' for William James MURPHY, showing his father as Dennis MURPHY and his mother as Jane WHEELI(sic)CK, is an extract from the Register of Baptisms of the (now) combined parish Church of Mayglass and Ballymore, County Wexford, Ireland. The certificate was provided to Daryl MURPHY (great-grandson) on 29 Sep 1987 by Rev Nicholas Doyle PP from Ballymore. It reads:

'Diocese of Ferns Parish of Ballymore/Mayglass

On examination of the Register of Baptisms of above Parish I certify that according to it William James MURPHY, East Bog, Mayglass, was born on … day of …, and was baptised according to the Rites of the Catholic Church on 14th day of November 1841 in the Church of Ballymore by the Rev., ….
