Biography of Thelma Irene (Murphy) Clary

Thelma Irene Murphy was born on 9 Dec 1913 in New Albany, Fall River Twp., Wilson County, Kansas to George Washington Murphy and Susie Belle (Pulleyblank). She was the seventh child born to this union, the first being a sister, Beatrice, born 1902; a brother, John, born 1904; a sister, Ellen Blonde, born 1907; a sister, Lillian Marguerite, born 1909; and a brother, Elmer Berkeley and sister, Edith Buenta, both born 1912.

Thelma is shown in the 1920 census of New Albany, Fall River Twp., Wilson County, Kansas living in the household of her father, George W. Murphy, a real estate agent, age 44, born Kansas, father born Illinois and mother born Indiana; his wife, Susie, is age 38, born Kansas, father born England and mother born Illinois; son John is age 15; daughter Blonde is age 12; daughter Marguerite is age 10; and daughter Thelma is age 6. All children born Kansas, and both parents born Kansas. A Frank Hamilton is also living in the household as a boarder, age 26, born Kansas, father born US and mother born Kansas.

A brother, George Harold Murphy, was born on 6 Nov 1922 in New Albany, Fall River Twp., Wilson County, Kansas to George Washington Murphy and Susie Belle (Pulleyblank) Murphy.

Thelma is shown in the 1930 census of New Albany, Fall River Twp., Wilson County, Kansas living in the household of her father, George W. Murphy, a farmer, age 54, born Kansas, father and mother both born Indiana (Illinois and Indiana); his wife, Susie B., is age 48, born Kansas, father born England and mother born Illinois; daughter L. Marguerite is age 20; daughter Thelma I. is age 16; and son George H. is age 7. All children born Kansas, and both parents born Kansas.

Thelma Irene Murphy and Russell Richard Clary, son of Richard Emery Clary and Evalina ‘Eva’ Marvin (Russell) Clary, were married on 13 Jan 1934 in Fredonia, Wilson County, Kansas.

A son, Russell Wayne Clary, was born on 19 Jun 1935 in Fredonia, Wilson County, Kansas to Russell Richard Clary and Thelma Irene (Murphy) Clary.

Thelma is shown in the 1940 census of Parsons, Labette Co., KS living in the household of her husband, Russel (Russell) Clary, a feed salesman for a rendering plant, age 27, born Kansas; his wife, Thelma, is age 27, born Kansas; and son (Russell) Wayne is age 5, born Kansas.

Thelma developed a love for reading and writing. She authored many poems and short stories during her life and had many published. She also loved animals and had a penchant for naming them. As we usually lived on a small farm just outside of town, we had plenty of livestock for her to name. Horses, cows, goats, pigs, dogs and cats each had a name. She was especially taxed when it came to the rabbits that we raised.

Thelma Irene (Murphy) Clary died on 19 May 1979 in Minden, Kearney County, Kansas and was cremated with her ashes scattered at the Weakley Cemetery, New Albany, Wilson County, Kansas, where her parents are buried.

Obituary - Clary Thelma Irene Clary, daughter of George and Susie Murphy, was born December 9, 1913 at New Albany, Kansas, and died May 19, 1979 at Minden (Nebraska). Thelma grew up in the Fredonia, Kansas area and was a graduate of Fredonia High School in the Class of 1932. In 1968 she moved to Minden and at the time of her death was employed by Pioneer Village. She was preceded in death by one brother, John Murphy of New Albany, Kansas, and one sister, Blonde Noakes of Erie, Kansas. Survivors include one son, Wayne Clary of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one sister, Mrs. Mar- guerite Lafferty of Exeter, Missouri; one brother, Harold Murphy of Las Vegas, Nevada; four grand- children; one great grandchild; other relatives and friends. A memorial service was held May 24, 11:00 a.m. at the Layton Funeral Home with Rev. Joseph Barr officiating. Cremation was at Westlawn Cemetery in Omaha. The Kearney County News, Wednesday, May 30, 1979.
