Biography of George Washington Murphy

George Washington Murphy was born on 22 May 1875 in Fall River, Greenwood County, Kansas to Walter George Murphy and Ellen Angeline (Gorton) Murphy. He was the fifth child born in the family, joining brother William, sisters Clara, Mary and Ella . A sister, Lillian Murphy, was born on 22 Jan 1878 in Fall River, Greenwood County, Kansas.

George is shown in the 1880 census of Salt Springs Twp., Greenwood County, Kansas as living in the household of his father, Walter, a farmer, age 34 (44), born Illinois, parents both born Tennessee; his wife, Angeline, is age 36, born Indiana, father born New York and mother born Missouri (Indiana); son William is a laborer, age 17, born Indiana; daughter Clara is age 14, born Indiana; daughter Mary is age 12, born Indiana; daughter Ella is age 10, born Indiana; son George is age 5, born Kansas; and daughter Lilie (Lillie) is age 2, born Kansas. All children's father born Illinois and mother born Indiana.

George is shown in the 1895 state census of Liberty Twp., Elk County, Kansas as living in the household of his father, W. G. (Walter George), a farmer, age 59, born Illinois; his wife, A. E. (Ellen Angeline), is age 53, born Indiana; daughter Ella is age 25, born Indiana; son G. W. (George Washington), is age 19, born Kansas; and daughter Lillia (Lillian) is age 17, born Kansas. On the actual census record, a couple is shown as a part of the household: T. S. Bewly, a farmer, age 25, born Missouri; and Ella Bewley, age 25, born Illinois. Note: Apparently the family number which should be entered before the head of the Bewley family was not entered causing the Bewley family to appear a part of the Murphy family.

George Washington Murphy and Susie Belle Pulleyblank, daughter of Samuel Evans Pulleyblank and Sarah Margaret (Smith) Pulleyblank, were married on 21 Mar 1900 in Sedan, Chautauqua County, Kansas.

George is shown in the 1900 census of Liberty Twp., Elk County, Kansas as living in the household of his father, Wallen (Walter), a farmer, age 64, born Jul 1835 in Illinois, parents both born Kentucky; his wife, Angeline, is age 55, born Indiana, father born New York and mother born blank; daughter Ella is age 30, born Dec 1860 in Illinois, father born Illinois and mother born Indiana; son George is age 25, born May 1875 in Kansas, father born Illinois and mother born Indiana; George's wife, Susie B., is age 19, born Apr 1881 in Kansas, parents both born England; and daughter Lily is age 22, born Jun 1878 in Kansas, father born Illinois and mother born Indiana. Walter and Angeline have been married 37 years. She has had 7 children with 4 (actually 6) still living. George and Susie have been married one year and she has no children. Also living in the household is Lean (Leon) Van Huff, age 13, rest unknown. Note: Leon was taken in by Walter and Angeline when the large family of his parents were orphaned. Leon's sister, Ina, is with the family of son William B. Murphy and his wife.

John Walter Murphy was born on 16 Jul 1904 in Fall River, Greenwood County, Kansas to George Washington Murphy and Susie Belle (Pulleyblank) Murphy.

(Susie Belle) is age 24, born Kansas; daughter Beatress (Beatrice) is age 2, born Kansas; and son John is 8 months of age, born Kansas . George and Susie's daughter, Beatrice, died in 1906 from a spinal injury caused by being kicked by a horse. Beatrice is buried in the Old Charleston Cemetery, Greenwood County, Kansas . Ellen Blonde Murphy was born on 25 Sep 1907 in New Albany, Wilson County, Kansas to George Washington Murphy and Susie Belle (Pulleyblank) Murphy.

Lillian Marguerite Murphy was born on 25 Jul 1909 in New Albany, Wilson County, Kansas to George Washington Murphy and Susie Belle (Pulleyblank) Murphy.

Elmer Berkley Murphy was born on 11 Jul 1912 in New Albany, Wilson County, Kansas and his twin sister, Edith Buenta Murphy on the same date to George Washington Murphy and Susie Belle (Pulleyblank) Murphy. Elmer died on 17 Sep 1912 in New Albany, Wilson County, Kansas. Edith died on 15 Aug 1912 in New Albany, Wilson County, Kansas. The twins are buried in the Old Charleston Cemetery, Fall River, Greenwood County, Kansas.

Thelma Irene Murphy was born on 9 Dec 1913 in New Albany, Wilson County, Kansas to George Washington Murphy and Susie Belle (Pulleyblank) Murphy.

George Harold Murphy was born on 6 Nov 1922 in New Albany, Wilson County, Kansas to George Washington Murphy and Susie Belle (Pulleyblank) Murphy.

George is shown in the 1930 census of New Albany, Wilson County, Kansas as a farmer, age 54, born Kansas, parents both born Indiana; his wife, Susie B., is age 48, born Kansas, father born England and mother born Illinois; daughter L. Marguerite is a teacher in the public schools, age 20; daughter Thelma I. is age 16; and son George H. (Harold) is age 7. All children born Kansas, parents both born Kansas.

George was the first successful brain tumor removal operation performed at the Halstead Clinic in Halstead, Kansas however, he died from the effects of ether pneumonia.

George died on 5 Sep 1932 in New Albany, Wilson County, Kansas and is buried in the Weakley Cemetery, New Albany, Wilson County, Kansas.
