1996 -- OBITUARY:
Johnnie Emerald Murphy passed away Tuesday, December 24, 1996 at Howard, KS. He was 94 years of age. Johnnie was born November 8, 1902 on a farm five miles north of Howard, to John Edwin and Nancy Jane (Adams) Murphy. He attended Elk County schools and grew to manhood in the Howard area. He married Mable Bretches in October of 1922 at Seda, KS. Mable died in Janury of 1927 after giving birth to their daughter, Zelma and her twin, who died three days after birth.
On March 14, 1928 he married Elsie Arabell Francisco at Fredonia, KS and to this union were born two sons, James Edwin and Robert Dean. They owned and operated a farm in Elk County until 1957, and then moved to Moline, KS in 1958. He was employed at Mac's Service in Moline, and was caretaker of the Moline Cemetery for several years. Johnnie worked in carpentry, house painting and lawn care since retiring in 1965. He loved to sing to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and spent many hours in his flower and vegetable garden after moving to Howard in 1975. He was one of the first elders of the Howard Church of Chrit and enjoyed spending time with this wife and family. He is survived by his wife, Elsie, his sons, James of Clearwater and Robert of Benton; his daughter, Zelma Carriger of Topeka; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 27, 1996 at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard with Tom Henry of Wichita, KS, officiating. Betty Russell provided the organ music. Diana Carriger sang "How Beautiful Heaven Must Be" and "An Empty Mansion". The casket bearers were Billy Carriger, Greg Carriger, Michael Gardner, Jerry Murphy, Robert Murphy, Jr., and Johnnie Murphy. Interment was held in the Moline Cemetery. A memorial has been established with the Howard Church of Christ.
Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
