Murphy (ASN: 36724869), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 17 February 1945, in the vicinity of Auersaacher, Germany.; When his platoon was ordered to attack, Sergeant Murphy averted confusion, by silencing rumors of casualties and led his men directly across an open field in the face of intense enemy fire. He attacked a house single-handed, killing a machine gun crew with a hand grenade and causing the surrender of four of the enemy. Although seriously wounded, he continued to lead his platoon, refusing medical aid, until the mission was completed and defense measures had been taken.
