Biography

Michael was German by lineage (although the German descent has been widely debated-- some Murr descendants have said that their DNA have shown that the Murr line actually came from England and the name was shortened from Murray upon coming to America; others have said that he was Scottish or Irish,) and Luthern (the Luthern connection seems to support the German claim). His will was written August 17, 1784 and proved February 9, 1785 < will book B: 162-163, Rowan County, North Carolina FHL #0019733 (1776-1794)> He is on the 1790 census of Rowan County, North Carolina. Susannah Moor made a will in Rowan County on November 7, 1804 and it was proved October 7, 1805

[1]

  • Michael bought city lots and ran a public ordinary (which I have seen described as ranging from a general store to a pub-- which in colonial times did double duty as the community center, courtroom, and sometimes church.) I have also read that Michael Murr was a potter and ran a pottery producing business. Only two children (John and George Michael) were mentioned in the will he made.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Michael by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Michael:
