This is sort of a biography of Howard William Murr constructed of the facts gleaned from various censi.

Howard William Murr was born in Tennessee. At the time of the 1910 census,he was 4 years old and was living in Maryville Ward 3, Blount County, Tennessee. During the 1920 census, he was 14 years old. His family seems to have moved, for they now live in Civil District 9, Blount County, Tennessee. At the time of the 1930 census, the census says he is aged 26 (which, according to the previous 2 censi, he should have been 24), and says he lives in Rockford, Blount County. He has by this time been married 6 years to Ethel Lily May Cook. Their daughters Elizabeth is 5 years old, and Virginia is 3 1/2 years old. Howard's sister Ina Belle lives with them as well and is 15 years old. Both Howard and his wife Ethel are employed at the Cotton Mill, him as a "twister", and she as a "spinner". (My daughter laughed and said that their job titles made them sound like dancers.) All of their neighbors are also employed at the Cotton Mill. The neighborhood seems to be, for the most part, a company/factory neighborhood, with the only exception being a man listed as a merchant/owner of a grocery store. Howard and Ina Belle's brother Frank Murr, his wife Mary and daughter Irene (aged 2 1/2) are next door neighbors. Frank's position at the cotton mill is working the cards (which is a preliminary step in processing the cotton. The carding process teases out some of the seeds, debris, etc., softening the cotton, and straightens the cotton fibers in preparation to spinning.) Mary, his wife is not employed. Howard and Ethel's home is rented for $8.00/ month and is not a farm. Frank and Mary's rent is $6.00/month. The rent Howard and Ethel pay seems to be about average for their area, with a couple neighboring homes being $6.00, one is $7.50/month, several $8.00/month, and the highest is $15.00/month (rented by the man listed as the merchant/grocery store owner). At the time of the 1940 census, Howard is listed as 36 years of age and now has the job title of "winder" at the Cotton Mill. He worked 40 hours the previous week, and 52 weeks the previous year, and had an annual income of $780.00. He and his family appear to have moved to rural Blount County and own their own home, which is estimated at $525.00 in value. The 1940 census says that they lived at the same home in 1935. It is also not classified as a farm (although my dad called it one, since he says they raised alot of their own food, and livestock). Ethel is listed as 36 years of age and is still employed as a spinner at the Cotton Mill. She had worked 16 hours during the previous week, with an annual income of $198.00. Their children are now: Elizabeth, 15; Virginia, 13; Ralph, 9; Charlotte, 7; James, 4; Yvonnne, 2; and Earl (dad), is less than a year old. Their only neighbors employed at the Cotton Mill now are Howard's brother Olliver and his wife Nancy, both who have job titles of "braiders". They live next door with daughter Mary Helen, aged 9, and son Kenneth, aged 8. Olliver also owns his own home which is estimated at $600.00. Olliver worked 45 weeks the previous year and Nancy, 24. Olliver had an annual income of $666.00, and Nancy's was $316.00. They are also neighbors with Dunlaps, Russells, Huskeys, Mitchells, Everetts, Hembrees, Turners, and 2 separate Latham families (and we see all of these surnames represented in the Murr genealogy).
