Just now read the weather post of Dec 2, 2001 but thought I would answer it here. some notable Civil War weather... The Union fleet headed for Hatteras Inlet in November 1861 was scattered by a North Atlantic gale. The USS Monitor was sunk in a storm off Cape Hatteras in Dececmeber 1862 Burnside's Mud March of January 1863 The steamer General Lyon or Lyons sank in a storm in January or February 1865 off Hatteras with a large loss of life. Some Illinois regiment en route room for muster out lost more men from the sinking than from any other cause in the war. Steamer Brother Jonathan sank in a storm off the Calif./Oregon coast in November 1865. Among the drowned was Union BrigGen. George Wright and his son who was a lt. and either an aide or adjutant to his father. An ice storm in December 1864 delayed MajGen. G. H. Thomas' attack on Hood near Nashville in December 1864 Don't remember reading of tornados/hurricanes but logic said there had to be some of each in during the four years.
