Biography

Richard was the son of Sir Thomas Musgrave (d. 1409) of Hartley Castle and other places in Westmorland. His mother was Alice, second wife of Sir Thomas, whose maiden name is unknown.[1][2][3]He was a justice of the peace in 1410, so presumably at least age 21 (born by 1389).[3]

He was knighted before 1418 and served as deputy sheriff of Westmorland beginning in 1423.[3]

Marriage and Children

Richard married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas Betham. Her brother was Sir Edward Betham of Betham Hall.

Additional daughter

Richard had a daughter Mabel, who does not appear in the Visitations. She married William Threlkeld, son of Sir Henry Threlkeld, but her husband had died by August 1445.[7]

Death

Richard died 9 November 1464 and was buried in Kirkby Stephen Church.[8][3]

Research Notes

The name of his mother varies in the Visitations cited. The History of Parliament entry is considered the most correct.

So History of Parliament is correct in saying that Richard was the son of Thomas & his second wife Alice.

Death year is given in his memorial I think in Edenhall. Ragg wrote an article about Edenhall

Musgrave-68 and Musgrave-504 appear to represent the same person because: Andrew Lancaster believes the two persons are the same based on sources.
