Philip Musgrave was born on the 21st of May 1607, son of Sir Richard Musgrave and his wife, Frances Wharton. [1][2] He inherited his father's baronetcy in 1615 when he was about 8 years old. [1] He was educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge and Trinity, Oxford.[1]
In 1625 he married Julian Hutton, daughter of Sir Richard Hutton of Goldsborough Hall in Yorkshire. [2] Together they had six sons, Richard, Phillippus, Christopher, William, Simon and Thomas, and a daughter, Francesca. [2] His education was furthered at Gray's Inn. [1]
Philip first entered Parliament in 1640 as Member for Westmorland. England was in a parlous state at this time and when Charles I raised his standard at Nottingham on the 22nd of August 1642 Philip was a royalist. He fought at Rowton Heath in 1646, was wounded and captured. Evidently he was released for he accompanied Charles II to Jersey in 1648, but returned to England soon after and forfeited his estates though he did obtain a pardon from Cromwell. His cousin, Sir Thomas Wharton, lent him £3000 to buy back his estates.[1]
Philip's situation improved with the restoration in 1660 though he declined a peerage on the grounds that he did not have the resources to support it. Re-elected to Parliament in 1661 he was a firm believer in the rightness of the Church of England and opposed any measures for toleration of other opinions, especially Quakers.[1]
Named by Shaftesbury as thrice vile, Philip died on the 7th of February 1678 and was buried at Edenhall.[1]
