Biography

Joseph Justice Musgrove was a planter on Exuma in 1810. He owned extensive acreage in the Exumas - 750 acres that comprised the Musgrove Estate, and some 2,000 acres on Little Exuma known as The Hermitage. By 1822, he had holdings in Saint Salvador (Cat Island) - the location of 72 slaves that he reported in the 1822 Bahamas Slave Registration.

Joseph was married twice: first, to Mrs Ann Musgrove, who died in Exuma in her 19th year in 1810, and second, to the mother of his children, Louisa Bonamy .

Joseph Musgrove of Saint Salvador and Louisa Bonamy, daughter of Bromfield Bonamy and Juliet Kemp, were married at St. Matthew's Anglican Church in the presence of W Farrington and Nelson Bonamy in 1818. They had children Thomas Bromfield, Robert Nelson, Charles James and Joseph Justice Musgrove.

Joseph Justice Musgrove filed the 1822 Saint Salvador Slave Returns; his widow, Louisa, filed the returns in 1825 and 1828 and 1831. Joseph Justice died between 1821 - 1824.

Estate of Joseph Justice appraised August 1825 and valued at 4,893 pounds. After the death of Joseph, the estate sold slaves to Charlotte Phillips, W Farrington, Kersey Sturrup, John Storr, WH Farrington, Roger Bow, John Major, Thomas Nuttall, William Lowe, and Thomas Skinner (among others).
